Any Mastiff owners have any good toy ideas for xmas? My parents have a new puppy she will be almost 5 months by xmas, I hear they are big chewers..

Hi!

Our other dog is an Argentine Mastiff who has just turned 2 and they are strong/aggressive chewers. We've found the black Nylabone or Kong chews work well. Nylabone also has a white bone shaped chew that's called a "Galileo bone" made for these type of chewers as well. We have both types and both our boys are big chewers. Our Boxer puppy (Dempsey who'll be 10 months later this month) looks kind of funny when he has one of the black ones - it's almost as big as his head! I would stay away from any stuffed toys or soft plastic ones (either with or without squeakers) as they can rip them to shreds in no time and then you have the worry of what they've swallowed from the toy (I spent 2 days poking through Tango's poop to be sure he was passing the fill OK from a stuffed animal he grabbed off our bed when he was about 6 months old). A junior size soccer ball is good for them too, they have a blast chasing it, pouncing on it and playing their version of dog soccer whether inside the house or outside - it also cleans easily which is a plus. It's just large enough that Tango can't pick it up in his mouth so less slobber to deal with. Also we've tried a frisbee, which worked out OK too when we've had them out where they can run/chase after it.

Hope this helps,
Penny

Thanks for the advice Penny, how big does an argentine mastiff get? My parents have an old english (I think thats what its called) and his grandfather was 250, his dad 180. I'm hoping Magoo and Hank will be good friends, they will meet for the first time this xmas.
Magoo loves his kongs, so I'm sure that might be a good bet for Hank as well.

Hey back - Glad I could be of help. Argentine Mastiffs don't get as big as the Bull Mastiff (think this is the type your folks have from the weights - OMG!!!). Males generally run 25-27 2/12" @ withers & weigh between 90-120 lbs with a very strong/muscular build. They mature slowly (males are considered adults somewhere between 2-3 years of age), Tango has just begun coming into his own lookswise in the last few months - chest/head development mostly. He stands about 27 1/2" and we're guessing he weighs about 110 lbs now (more than me!!!). I'm a bad mommy, haven't posted any pix of my "boys" on this board as yet, hopefully, I'll get to it soon. We brought Dempsey home @ 9 weeks (Tango was about to turn 17 months old) and they got along famously from day one; even though they each have their own bowls, many times both of them will be drinking from the same bowl at the same time - I need to buy stock in a paper towel company the way I go through them mopping up the spills! I'm sure that Magoo & Hank will get along well too.

Magoo's mama: Sorry my error, after I'd last posted I did a search on Old English vs. Bull Mastiffs and learned they are different breeds. In any case, they are both big breeds and I think the toy ideas I gave you should be OK.

Armyboot - yes.
