I've been reading the posts here for months, while I waited for my boxer and think you guys are so knowledgable and love your babies! My girl will finally be here at the end of September! I am thinking that I will use an x-pen, but I am curious about how sturdy they are.

Has anyone used them and if so, how big is it and where do you have it set up?

I will also use a crate, so what I was thinking of doing is getting a big enough pen to put the crate inside of and leave the door to the crate open.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Well, we got an x-pen but only use it when we're home because our pup tried to jump it once and got stuck (thankfully we were there). It's quite tall too! I do believe there is an even taller one and had I known her capacity to jump I may have gone taller (about 6 feet at least). Ian Dunbar does suggest something like an x-pen (which can be attached to a metal crate) for long term crating, but given boxers jumping ability you have to be really careful about that. Just something to think about. :)
Best of luck to you.

I keep my Boston in an x-pen during the day. She is an extreme jumper. She is only 12lbs but can jump on window sills, the kitchen table and I've even caught her on the kitchen counter. She is fearless. She jumped her baby gate when she was only 4 months old but she has never attempted to jump out of her x-pen. My other Boston, Sophie could jump out of baby gates when she was only 12 weeks old but she never attempted to jump/climb the x-pen either.

Tatie is baby gated in the kitchen during the day and has never attempted to jump them. She can see over the top of them even though she's only 4 1/2 months old but has never attempted to jump over. I do have to say, Tatie only recently started jumping on/off the couch without her stool :) She's a big baby. I'm going to get her an x-pen too because she has started tearing apart my kitchen. I will x-pen both her and Ellie side by side and hopefully, that will put an end to our destruction :)

They sleep in crates at night.

X-Pen

We have one in our basement for Bailey-- she's not a jumper but we got the big one anyways just in case. She really seems to like it, since there's more room to move around and she has window access. We attached it to her crate so she's got somewhere cozy to sleep during the day also. It put us at ease too, since she wasn't so confined during the day like she was when we tried the crate.

We just used the ol' staple gun to attach each end to the wall to make the area larger, and wire ties to connect to the crate. There's a ton of room in there. If you're using this for a puppy, I'd stock up on potty pads when you go get the pen, there's way too much room in there for a puppy. Personally, I'd start with the crate only and upgrade them to the pen once they get the hang of holding their bladder. Just a thought.

Swean,
Thanks for the reply, and I think your Bailey is one looker!!

If you could, would you mind taking a picture of how you have the pen and crate set up? I can't quite visualize it! What kind of crate do you have?

I agree with you, the pen will probably be too much room at first. But after she gets a little older I want to give her more room.

Let me know if you post a pic. Thanks.

x pen

Hello all, what is an x pen? I just purchased like a childrens play yard for our puppy, so when we're not there we can kind of keep him confined, its has a lot of room though so he can play. Just curious. Phyllis

I wondered the same thing... can someone describe this x-pen... We too have a play pen we use it when we travel to family members houses with our puppy so that she is not left at home and she gets the needed socialization. It wont work when she is older b/c its only like 3 ft high but its great for right now. We also have gates alllllll over the house to keep her contained but this X-PEN sounds interesting.

oh I see the link is great that is EXACTLY the model of play pen (thats what we call it) we got for our little girl. It is great and portable we have even found uses at home. One door way could not be gated and the playpen comes appare we put 2 pieces in an L and have the door secured. THank you for the clarification.
