Worms?

Ok so i feel like i live in this forum - i did a search on worms and nothing answered my question.

I just went outside to pick up Bradlee and Pudgey's fresh pooh and any other poo I have missed during this crazy week. Well i pick up one of Bradlee's pooh and there are maggot like worms in it. A lot of them. Now I know this is not her fresh from 5 mins ago pooh. It might be from last night or this morning...
So here are the questions - the things looked like maggots. were they worms? can they show up later, not right when she poos? was these things in fact maggots? I check her fresh poo and nothing - but being on the raw diet she doesn't pooh much so i don't have much to work with...

anyone with any advice please let me know.

Hard to say... I wouldn't expect maggots quite that quickly, but on the other hand, it's extremely strange that there's nothing in the fresh poop.

The simplest thing would be to take a fresh poop sample to your vet to be tested for the presence of any parasites or their eggs. And if there is anything there, at least you will get the correct meds to deal with the specific worm.

If it matters it has been a hot hazy 90 plus degree here. even at night it is staying in the 80s - perfect maggot weather.

My main concern is with the raw diet she doesn't much too often or much. So I don't want to miss anything if she does have worms. are there any other signs?

I am going to monitor her pooh for a day or two and see if anything weird shows up. She is due for her yearly fecal exam august 1, so we could just move it up...

i thought i had read some where that some worms "show up" a couple hours after they have poohed... but i cannot remember the source and the internet is not always accurate. Anyone have any experience with that?

As hot as its been,I've noticed little critters attaching themselves to Chanceys pooh rather quickly if I don't pick it up immediately.

I know what you mean Wanda, we pick the poo up as soon as they've done it and you go in to get a poo bag, come out and there are like 20 odd flies on it already

We're dealing with the same thing.

Semmi's poop has been fine, plus it is lighter colored, so I think you just can't see the no see ums in it. Oscars is fairly dark, I think that is why things show up so easy.

It's Oscars that keeps giving me fits. I thought we had a round of tapeworm a few weeks ago, I think I may have been wrong (but it doesn't hurt to go ahead and treat). If I wait more than 15 or 20 minutes before I go scoop, there are all kinds of critters already 'breaking it down'. His fresh poop has nothing in it, it's the 'aged' poop that has stuff showing up.

What I am seeing looks like tiny little maggots. Not the full grown, but very small ones. He's on heartworm preventative, which is also supposed to control roundworm and ascarid. He's been treated for tapeworm within the past two weeks. I think I am just overreacting.

The vet exams have come up negative...but I am going to keep checking. It's driving me nuts!

Can't wait until zero degree weather at this point. If there is anything in the poop then, I will KNOW that it is coming from him!

*sigh* It's so gross, and I know if the neighbors see me doing this they are going to think I am crazy. YUCK

Anyone else have some insight?

Okay I'm glad someone else started a thread like this. Like Sidhewlf said, with this heat, things seem to show up on their poop in no time. I forgot to take a bag out with me last evening and by the time I went in and got one and came back out, there were these tiny little white things on his poop. When he was finished earlier today, I checked his poop and there were no white things on it. I think it has something to do with insects or the heat. I was freaking out though, that he might have some parasite. I still may take a sample in to be checked though.

Hi everyone. I recently dealt with this same issue. I was sometimes coming across little white worm things in my dog's poop. Sometimes they were there, sometimes not. When I took a sample into my vet, he examined it and said they were maggots. YUCK! The vet just told me to clean up the poop asap so we don't have thousands of flies in our backyard. I would definitely take a sample in though to make sure your baby doesn't have worms.

Good lord. I applaude you guys for going around picking up poop. I couldnt do it with 3 dogs running around, I wouldnt have time for my skin kids. That and my back injury wouldnt let me. =(

Same here! We have little black dung beetles in the yard! scared me to death the first time I picked up some in a baggie and felt the poop move! The other day I noticed a pile in the flower bed that was still muddy from the sprinklers and when I scooped it there was maggots! Eww! There have been alot of flies in the heat. Hope that's all it was with you too and not worms! wormicon
