Wont Stop vomiting

Last Thursday we took our 6 month old male to the vet because he stopped eating and drinking his water and was vomiting every 15 minutes for 16 hours straight. After the inital vomiting of his meal, he would just vomit white foamy mucus over and over. Then for the last 2 hours of the 16 he got diarreah on top. He lost 8 lbs (from 52 lbs). The vet kept him for 3 days pumping him back up with fluids through an IV and giving him heavy doses of anti-viral medicine.

We got him back on a Saturday and by the evening he ate a small meal and went to bed early. Sunday he woke up back to his old self again, ate his pill and his breakfast and played all morning, ate a healthy dinner and went to bed at normal time. Monday his stool got runny again and by Thursday Night, he began vomiting an hour after every meal. Its now Saturday morning and he hasn't held a meal down in 12 hours with the exception of a little white rice we steamed for him around 5pm. Now he has no interest in food and he has vomited 3 more times and it is a white, foamy slime comming out. He wont drink water either now. All he does is lay on the floor and then get up to go vomit. He hasn't held down one of his perscription anti-viral pills for 3 days now. We've tried feeding him is Perscription Science Diet IQ, and his regular Innova Puppy food and he has no interest in either. He wont even go after a potato chip that falls on the floor.

Anyone have a similar problem? We want to take him back to the vet but we are running out of loose cash to be paying $800 vet bills.

Your poor puppy! I take it your vet doesn't have any suggestions.

I wouldn't feed Science Diet of any type. I would try some boiled oatmeal and chicken. Just cut up a chicken breast into little pieces and boil with the oatmeal until mushy. Try feeding a tablespoon at a time and see if he keeps it down. I would also try giving him some natural unflavored yogurt. That will help get some good bacteria back in his gut.

Your puppy should be getting injections of an anti-vomiting medicine. No medicine is going to do any good if it comes back up. Fluids are also a very good idea to give on a regular basis while an animal is vomiting. If you are comfortable with needles ask your vet if you can take a bag of fluids home to give your dog along with the anti vomiting medicine which can be given with the fluids.

You should really try to get fluids in the baby. Dehydration just makes everything worse.....ask your vet if they will work wth you on payments. I know how you feel about the cash situation...I spent over $500 on my two girls just this week on cancer care and emergencies.

Are you a vet?

We took your advice and stopped the antibiotics and the Science Diet. I bagan feeding him Friday afternoon at 12 noon. I boiled some chicken thighs in water and carrots and began feeding him 2 Tbsp of Chicken and 2 Tbsp of rice, mashed potato, or oatmeal with his chicken.

He is beginnig to get his appetite back and the eating is making him want to drink water again. So now we feed him small amounts of Chicken and Rice/oatmeal/mashed potato in 2 Tbsp increments. His stool is still mushy and greenish in color but it is better than the brown water that was shooting out of him the last week. His gas has also gone down considerably and when he does let out a "toot" it doesn't knock you down.

Is there any other home remedies that will tighten him up a little more and make his stool harder?

We are just glad he is finally on the mend after 10 days. He sleeps all day and we wake him every hour to feed him a little food and then he plays for 15 mins or so, then its back to the couch for a long nap.

Sounds like you are on the right track. When my boxer was young he vomited alot. One vet wanted to do surgery. I sought out a 2nd opinion and boy was I glad I did. we swiched his food a fwe times and he was fine. He is now 9 1/2 and he looks great. He has eaten Eukanuba Premium Performance his whole life. REcently he began throwing up so he now eats the Low Residue version of the food and is fine. If he doesn't continue to get better, maybe see a new vet on a friends recommendation.

I believe you can feed a little pumpkin-not the canned kind for baking-and that will help firm up the stool. Glad your baby is feeling better.

Pumpkin can be helpful (just about a teaspoon). It is the canned pumpkin just PLAIN pumpkin, not the kind with any spices as used for pies. You might cut out the carrots and potato and just stick with the boiled chicken and rice/oatmeal until things firm up.

Once the stools are firm you can begin mixing in your pups regular food. You haven't said what he's eating but do make sure if it is kibble, that it's a quality kibble that has the best ingredients for your boxer's health (checkout the feeding forum for more info).

Best of luck, and I do hope things continue improving as they seem to have done. If it doesn't, you might want to try another vet?

One more thing.... instead of using chicken thighs, you might boil a skinless chicken breast. The thigh is fattier and could exacerbate the tummy issues. A less fatty protein might be easier to digest. As Jan suggested, plain yoghurt is helpful as well.
