Hi Everyone...

We have now had our rescued boxer for a week and since then it has gotten really cold. Our doggie doesn't seem to like to go out, she even peed on the floor at 2:00 AM because she wouldn't go out last night before bed!!!

Anyway...this is our first boxer and we were aware that they cannot stand extreme cold/warm temps, but she sits at our back door and shivers, and it'a 45 degrees out. Is this normal? Do we need to get a coat for her? She will not go out in the sun to warm herself, she just sits at the door and shivers! It's getting frustrating because she absolutely will not go outside, I have to pull her out, and when she's out she won't go potty because she wants to come in.

Any suggestions?

Are you going out with her? It doesn't sound as though she's really that well toilet trained. Boxers do feel the cold, and no dog likes to potty in the rain, but it sounds a bit as though she's taking things to the extreme here. Not wishing to go out and sit in the sun either would suggest to me that the problem is more outside than the actual temperature.

Anyway - you can't toilet train a dog unless you go out with them to potty. How else can you be there to praise and tell them what a great thing it was - which is the only way they can learn. So go out with her, and try to interest her in other things, such as a game and running around. That's a great way to get the bowels working ;)

I agree with Debbie;) If you go outside with her and make it a game, play ball, or throw a frisbee...Bella loves it outside, but Bubba hates the cold weather...he shivers for attention

I also agree, you need to go outside with her so she understands why she's there. She may think you're leaving her out there and she's nervous.

I agree. Why would you expect her to want to go out when you don't even want to go out. It's a slight pain in the beginning, but after a couple months when your dog knows what to do it will be worth it.

We got gid in November, when he was 10 weeks old. He really, really hated the cold....But every morning, I'd pick him up and take him to the grass. I also got him used to a sweater, which really helped him. Soon, he wanted to go outside and play, even in the cold.
