i have chosen my pup and will receive him on Nov 7th, cant wait!!!!!! but i have a question. i live in Canada and our winters can get a little cold. i was wondering if i should buy clothing for my new pup or will his own coat keep him warm enough for his daily exercises?

I got my boxer girl last September and she was really cold in the fall and winter. I had a coat for her and I think it helped. I didn't buy too many cloth for her last year because she was growing so fast. The coat I got for her was a little oversized in the beginning but fit all winter.

We got our guy in OCT last year and I had a little vest for him when we stayed outside for more than just a potty break. We didn't do this often because he would shiver (I'm in Wisconsin and our temps get pretty cold too)

My advice is - if you are simply doing potty breaks/training hopefully you dotn' have to be out there THAT long - but if you plan to do other things outside with your pup then investing in a slightly oversized jacket/vest would not be a horrible thing. Our vest fit until about JAN and i bought it in OCT cuz he grew so fast so just a heads up.

since its a pup you won't be doing extended walks or anything outside TOO long until he is older so who knows.

Can't wait to see pics of the puppy!

When Moto was pup we would buy cheap children's hoodies for him to wear. You can check him out wearing his hoodies here: Boxer Dog Photo Gallery & Postcard - Jan Gallery

When he got a little bigger, I would make a horse blanket style coat for him. He still wears one most of the winter, because it is so cold here in Manitoba.

Good luck with your pup!

When I got Arabella I lived in VA. I didn't get a coat or anything else for her. She came home in Feb. She was never outside in the snow more than 5 mins and many times by then you could see her shivering. Thankfully in Va it would not stay too cold for too long. When you are looking for a jacket make sure he has room so that he can pee without getting his jacket wet. BTW Congrats on your new addition!

We live in MI and I am looking for winter coats for both my pups. Last Feb when we brought Freyja home she was so cold outside she could hardly pee. Sometimes with a brand new pup you can be out there for a little while as your pup is still trying to figure out why you keep taking them outside every 30 min :) She would get so cold at potty breaks that she would sit on top of my feet.

I actually already bought sweaters for both my guys to wear in the house and out for quick potties but am looking for coats for walks etc.

Good luck and post pics !

We live in MI as well, and I've been debating whether or not to buy my 13 week-old pup a bigger sweater for this fall/winter because she loves being outside, even when it's soo cold! I put a sweater on her a couple weeks ago on a particularly cold day, and I received looks like I'm one of those awful people that dresses their dogs up for fun :/ I suppose a general rule of thumb would be if she's shivering, dress her up-- despite the looks!

thats the biggest thing with me. i hate it when ppl dress up thier dog. I really dont want to be one of those ppl but if my pup is cold then he will be wearing a sweater. from the replys i can see it will be neccasary so i guess i will be out looking for clothing. lol. thanks everyone for the help.

my DH and i said we would never dress our dogs up like that  well that all changed when it got so cold that our baby started to shiver. she now has a sweater and i am looking for a coat for her for this winter since its projected to be alot colder then normal. i can handle the looks from other people but i can't handle the sad "I'm cold" look from my baby girl :D

congratulations on the addition to your home. enjoy.

I can't stand when people dress their dogs up. My first thought is, "Give the poor thing some dignity!" When it is cold out, I do put on coat on mine to protect them. I also drive a convertible, so when the top is down they wear doggles to protect their eyes. I do not consider this dressing up my dog. This is taking the best possible care of my four-legged family member.

I did put a bandana on my dogs that said, "Don't just stand there, pet me!" But I think of that as just letting people know what they were thinking. :)
