Cooper hardly barked when he was younger and never really does but if he hears the door bell or a knock at the door he does bark. I was so shocked the first time he did that....it actually made me feel good cause I would think he would protect me, you know. He will also bark at me if he is outside and wants to come in.

My first 2 (Beau and Jesse) did not bark much the first year. Now Beau will bark when I am in the pool or someone is in the pool but Jesse still doesnt bark that much. Hank, at 5 months barks more than I would like :) So I think it depends on the dog.

If only I had this problem! LOL!

Be careful what you wish for! I can't get mine to shut up! I remember those days and then we thought it was so cute that they growled or barked at a noise, and we praised them for it! foolicon Big Mistake! Live and learn! :)

Jagger never really barks much. Only when something is wrong or if his little Boston brother, Nakai is annoying him. It nice sometimes because his bark is so loud but then again I do wish he would just a little when there is a knock at the door to let them know he's there. :)

When we rescued Boze, we seriously thought he couldn't make any noises at all! He didn't bark until he'd been home with us 3 weeks, and bf was playing with him. Even though he's been with us almost 2 1/2 mos. now, he is still very quiet...
I think its just an individual dog thing...like how some humans talk a lot and others prefer the quiet.

Enjoy it while it lasts!

Biff is 4 months, and hardly ever barks!

In fact, on the rare occassion he does, he kinda tilts his head to the side, with a puzzled expression, as if ti say "Who made that noise????" foolicon

I think time will tell if he will be a "barker" when he is older. Reading all the replies, it seems to vary.

I'm just enjoying it at the moment

I believe that barking comes with age. Little ones are not too sure what the use for barking is really, except mostly in play. As they grow and become more territorial about their home and family, barking will become a natural instinct to alert you to strangers or potential danger.
Xena is almost 10 and Spirit almost 2. They bark when someone comes to the door or when another animal is too close to our home. In Xena's younger years, I worried something was wrong with her because she never barked...that I heard of!! I returned home one day to find out she had been barking her lungs out most of the day, according to the neighbors, and it was then I realized she was experiencing separation anxiety. I never even thought of scolding her (what use would that be anyway) for barking and disturbing the neighbors as I was too excited to hear her bark!! Spirit's been barking since he was knee-high to a grasshopper...he has a lot to say!! He barks like he has laryngitis! He starts off deep and ends it with weak "woo-woo-woo-woo's"!! I LOVE how his jowls puff out when he barks...he looks so goofy!
Anyway...be careful what you wish for! One day you may find yourself saying "oh for crying out loud...don't you ever shut up!!"! foolicon

OMG - I want to ask the opposite - will mine ever STOP barking? Lol.

Mine bark at every movement - it's even worse when DH isn't home. It's like they both go on protection overdrive. A cat jumps off the dryer - barking. I get something out of the refridgerator - barking. Dogs bark on tv - barking, and sometimes howling.

Agh. Enjoy the quiet!
