Today was our puppy's 3rd day at home and he wouldn't touch his food this morning. He has been eating everything in sight the past two days and then all of the sudden he wouldn't have anything to do with it. I am wondering if he is getting to like his treats that I give him when he goes potty too much. We feed him in his crate twice a day because that is what the Breeder had been feeding him. Should I try to up the meals to three times a day with smaller amounts and see if that works? Thanks to all.

I just read my post and I apologize that it looks like a 5th grader wrote it, I was rushed when I originally wrote it. Basically, my pup is really enjoying the treats that I give him when he goes to the bathrooom outside, and I am worried that he is getting spoiled to the taste of them, causing him not to eat his food. We feed him twice a day (this is what the breeeder suggested) in his crate. Again he was doing great the past two days but today not so much. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

How old is your puppy? If he's still very young feeding him 3-4 times a day is much better. Also, what do you feed? If you feed kibble you can try mixing it with some warm water or even a spoon or two of canned dog food (my puppy likes Wellness 95%meat, grain free). If he gets a lot of treats throughout the day it is possible that he's just not hungry. I don't know what you use for treats but I would only use tiny little pieces as a reward. I wouldn't be worried as of now. Leave the food down for 30 minutes if he dosn't eat take it away and try again 4 or 5 hour later (depending on your feeding schedule).

Could be lots of things, I know that is no help to you.. How old is puppy? It sounds like he was eating and just went off how many meals has he skipped? He could be getting full enough off treats he is not hungry for plain food. Do you feed raw? Dry? Dry with anything mixed? If it was just one or two meals I would not worry too much but I would if it was more then that. Also making sure there is not a lot of activity by the crate helps they will just want to get out and play and not worry about eating. If it is dry you can try mixing just a little plain yogart, or adding a little water sometimes small changes make them interested again. Also reducing the amount might not be a bad idea they tend to eat it all up when they think it is almost done. Just some thoughts..Good luck

He is 7 weeks old and we are feeding him Purina Puppy Chow. I went home for lunch today and gave him half a cup and he put a nice little dent in it, so maybe he just wasn't very hungry this morning. We are going to start feeding him three smaller meals a day and see if that works. As for treats, we tried turkey dogs but he just spits the little pieces out, so we tried a small piece(very small) of salomi and he loves it. Thanks so much for your advice it was very helpful.

my dog went through the same phase. i kept thinking "my they are finicky....just like the forums say." but, she wasn't that hungry as it turned out. a week later, after a nice 15 minute walk, she turbo-chowed a meal and looked up at me for more. i thought, "now, we are on to something," only to have her shut down again in a couple days.

the three things that work really well for us:

1.. patience. keep your mind open, and watch. you will pick up on your pup and adjust.

2.. walks. my pup always eats better after a nice walk.

3.. and, if all else fails, mix in a little of the canned stuff....for flavor. that was the biggest change i made, and the most successful. if boxers tend to bore easily, its very simple to buy a few flavors of canned food with some form of gravy in them. add a table spoon or two per half cup of dry food.

my girl is suddenly eating 3 cups a day w/o problems every time i put the bowl down.

as for the "switch foods" comment... all kibble is crap unless you want to spend a fortune...even the "name brands" that vets recommend. it all has tons of filler, and a lot of it has corn products. i have gone nuts reading labels and it's ALL crap according to what we are supposed to look for. if it drives you that crazy, you can supplement some raw meats from your local butcher and/or look into the BARF diets.

I disagree that all kibble is bad. Purina/Eukanuba/Science Diet, yes awful food and full of corn, fillers, artificial flavors.

But, then you have foods like Wellness, TOTW, Orijen that have real meat in them and only quality ingredients. Not cheap foods, but they need to eat less of the food so it balances out somewhat.

RAW diet is great, but is simply not do-able for some people (like me).

I've got to agree with johann. The higher priced kibble appears to be pretty good for pooches health, and really, $40 on a bag of dog food is a lot cheaper than buying for a raw diet (I looked into it). To me, it's just one of the expenses involved in having dogs.

But I second the idea of switching kibble. Once you start reading about them and the ingredients, you start appreciating the better stuff.

Let us know how he's doing!

I switched him to three meals a day and he is doing much much better. Thanks for all of the advice, I am going to start the food switch pretty soon. Again thanks to everyone for the advice, this forum is awesome.
