I have great results with benedryl and its far cheaper and not as toxic(the vet assured me of this so i hope he is correct) as giving predisone or a corto shot. I saw results with Tango in about a week(food-wise). I just gave him based on his weight of 59 pounds 2-25mg benedryls in the morning and the same at night until his itchy calmed down then i went to 2 a day now he only uses it when he has a small flare-up. My vets office really dosnt like to use drugs if they can help it but as we all know sometimes its a need. I was happy to know benedryl was something he could have and wouldnt hurt him. The only thing they warned about was if he took it for a long period of time he would become immune to it. But that would take awhile and he had to take it for more than a few weeks before i was able to lower it down to nothing.

anyhow he is nice and white now..no more itchy red skin and alot less shedding..:) Good luck!!

itchy- also!!

We've also been fighting with the itching ears. No ticks-fleas or mits, vets is also thinking food allergy. We have switched to the nutro lamb and rice which seems better than any food with chicken. Chicken seems to be bad news. The vet did have us try steriods and wow the itching stopped immediatley, but they say it's not good to have then on steriods for extended periods of time, but boy does it do the trick.

Dog's are same as we are when it comes to allergens. They can be allergic to anything at any time. Lamb, fish, buffalo, venison, duck those kinds of meats arent something a dog normally encounters so the allergy factor to that lessons quite a bit. At least that's what Ive been told. I wont give my dog a steriod shot unless it totally unavoidable. I try everything else first. Luckily the benedryl has always worked well for us and quickly too. I highly recommend trying that first. My vet has told me that the use of a steroids can cause renal problems and possibly failure, he prefers not to use them unless he has no other safer choice. Im thankful for his honesty and his kind care of my baby. I wish there were more out there that told you everything before shooting a needle into our fur baby's!

I've battled allergies with my white boy, Scooby, for quite some time. Do a search on my username binky and you should come up with several posts on the subject.
