Will he EVER quit trying to get the cat??

Hello again. I have a question.
I moved into my friend's house with her three months ago. She has a kitten that's only about 6 months old. Louie will NOT let up. It is a constant struggle trying to get him to stop chasing the cat. When he does get to her, they just play, and I know the cat just eats it up. But it gets to be a little annoying when all of his attention and focus is on that darn cat! (Jealousy?? Yes.)
I thought at some point he'd get used to her and be able to just chill.... but it's been three months!

Have any of you moved into a household with a cat, and how long did it take for them to stop constantly chasing it?

We had a cat Gigi first and he grew up with a Doberman so he's used to dogs. and when we had to put the beautiful Dobie to sleep Gigi was lonely and we all wanted another dog. So we got a 3 month old Boxer that we named Trooper. Trooper has been with us for over two years and he still chases Gigi all over the house and yard. They get along fine but when Trooper is looking for something else to bother it's usually the cat. When we tell him to leave the cat alone his geelings get real hurt. :rolleyes: The other thing we can't stop him from doing for long is for him not to eat the cat's food.:(
I often wonder if we had gotten Trooper when he was younger than 3 months if this would have helped him not chase the kitty...

Ozzy is two and as long as the cat doesn't move all is well but as soon as the cat moves, the chase is on!

I just let my dogs go ahead & play with the kitty. The cat actually come in front of the dogs & rubs up on them to initiate play. I just let them go, when we first got Brandy they would drive me crazy but now the novelty has worn off. Do you have a place for the cat to go when he doesn't want to play? My cat goes in my bedroom or on top of his litter box, I guess that is considered a *safety*. LOL

It sounds like the kitten is playing a game of catch me if you can.

We had a cat that lived over twenty years, and she was a timid, fearful thing. It took her weeks and even months to get used to a new dog in the house, or even another cat.

However, she did get used to every animal that came into our home during her long life. She would frequently curl up next to the dog(s).

She grew amazingly close to our first Boxer, Rocky. If she walked into the room, he'd continue to lie on the couch, and she would eventually join him.

When she felt like a game of chase me, she'd stay at the foot of the stairway, staring at Rocky until he saw her. She'd flick her tail, and he'd bolt after her as she streaked up the stairs and under a bed.

In a few minutes, she'd come out from her sanctuary and weave her body between his legs, purring with smug satisfaction.

If you want some relief, place a baby gate in a doorway high enough from the floor to allow only the cat to pass beneath it. Regardless of how well they get along, there are times when cats just plain want to be left alone.

This assures the cat has a quiet refuge to which it can beat a hasty retreat.

Well good luck with this one, we have had Jasper for 5 and 1/2 years (brindle-boy) and he STILL chases the cats and we have 4. and like already said if noone moves it is ok but once the cat moves the chase is on. I am just worried that one of these days he is going to catch one and they would hurt him with those claws. I try to clip them often just for that reason..Jasper is a pretty well trained boxer, but when it comes to the cats, all bets are off I guess ---

When we first daybrought Dakota home, the cat nearly bit his nose....then gradually the hissing turned to swatting (lucky for Dakota she is declawed)....now the swatting is just the cat's way to torment the dog and get the chase on.

I don't think the cat and dog games will ever end.

Great question! I was wondering the same thing.....We have two cats a 17 year old with no claws and no teeth and a 1 1/2 year old with no claws. Hogan (5 1/2 mos.) chases both of them and they both try to get Hogan to chase them. They bat his face when he has them cornered and he tries nipping at them. He once caught up to the 17 year old and flipped him on his back. I really thought he was going to hurt him but the cat was able to run into one of the spare bedrooms. We have the baby gate thing going on in the two spare bedrooms. The one cat will also go to the basement (a place Hogan has never ventured so far). They both go under the bed too, but Hogan still wiggles his way under there. He's not able to move around under the bed as quickly as he used to. I think he's going to dive under there one day and get stuck and the cats will torture him! The only time they can get close to him is when he's played out and sleeping. They go up to him and sniff him but he doesn't care at that point. The 17 year old always goes into his cage and drinks his water. The 1 1/2 year old sometimes goes into his cage and pees in his water! He sneaks their food and drinks their water too. It's a crazy life with these three nuts! So, I guess it will be going on for a long long time!

Baron chases our 13 year old cat whenever he gets the chance - the cat has not given him many chances however! Boots just stays upstairs all the time because Baron is not allowed up there.

Our Ol' Man kitty just never runs, . Even if they approach and give him a thunk on his head with their big ol paw trying to initiate play, he knows if he runs play is on, so he just stands there and gives them a dirty look, or if they keep it up he yeowls at them to knock it off or swats them. They do. I believe if we got a kitten, and it ran, they would be lots of chasing/playing going on tho.
