Peaches ran away.....

H,
We got Peaches less than 2 days ago. This morning I went downstairs to get a dish and lo and behold, she bolted out the screen door, the door was apparently not latched tight and she just pushed it open and took off like lightening. I screamed for her and she was already down the street 3 houses away. I was frantic as I knew I could not get her, just way too quick. My hubby was not here so I grabbed his keys and went 2 times around the neighborhood and the second time I went around I saw her running from a back yard. I stopped the truck and called her name and she got right in.
I am ready to go out of my mind with theis dog we adopted not even 2 days ago but we are already attached to her. I am so paranoid she will get out again. Any suggestions, other than to make sure latch is correct???
Thanks,
Diane

I am sorry to hear that she got away, but luckily you got her back. I had two boxers that used to do that, unfortunately they both died of cancer. They would constantly get out and run from me. I finally just went to all the neighbors and told them that they do sometimes get out and if they saw them to please grab them and put them back in the fence if I was not home. They always did. It only happened a couple of times. I started walking both of them everyday and it seemed to help a little bit. I don't know if walking them helped them explore, so they didn't want to run.

I'm glad to hear you got her back! I know how you feel. Recently Charlie Paper has learned how to open the gate in my boyfriend's back yard. I spent 2 hours on morning trying to find him and my bf's dog. I know the stress and the worry of not finding your baby, reguardless of how long you've had them. We put a clip on the gate Charlie was getting out off, but it doesn't stop me from worrying when he's out there. I definatly feel for you.

I'm glad you got her back! But if you have only had her 2 days, just give her a little time to realize the boundries of the yard..maybe she isn't used to it yet..take her around on the lead to help her understand...don't give up yet! Give her a little time and good luck!

Give her some time :) You've only just adopted her and she'll take a while to settle in and adopt you as her pack. And dog's don't necessarily respond to the calls of strangers (which is what you are - sorry), even if they're not total strangers. I know my dog doesn't - but he'll came when I call him ;)

And in fact, it is possible that she may never have been taught a recall command in the first place.

So give her time to settle in. Once she knows you're her 'pack', she's less likely to make a break for it in the first palce. And work hard on her recall - in 'safe' places like your home and yard, and in other places where you've got her on a long line and can enforce the command. In time she'll come around, I'm sure. But it's something that will take some patience and a lot of work. Worth it in the long run though :)

I saw your other post regarding this dog as well and you really are just not giving her any time at all to get used to things. Dogs don't come already trained most of the time and this dog doen't know you. You really need to just give her some time and she will come around and learn to love you but things like that don't happen instantly. Not saying this in a mean way at all but you are expecting too much too soon. Keep working with her and she will learn and come around. You have only had her a couple of days.

a possible reason your dog might have run away today is because it is the 4th of july. many animal shelters are busy the days after the fourth due to the fireworks startling dogs that are left outside in the backyard or are unattended. gmacleod is correct in mentioning that your dog is still getting used to the new surroundings and owners. give your dog some time and they'll come around. take care to watch over your dog while people are lighting off fireworks.

- - - i hadn't noticed your prior post regarding your dog until vela mentioned it above. it seems as if your dog just needs to get used to its new surroundings as both vela and gmacleod mentioned. she is right in mentioning that dogs do not come pre-trained, and since she was an adopted dog, who knows what her prior experiences might be. you might to invest in some obedience classes also. this will help out in having some control over your dog and will defintiely help out with her recall, which will eliminate her bolting out like she did earlier today.

One thing that you DO NOT want to do is yell at her or use physical discipline when you do get her to come back or when you catch her, actually you should Never use physical discipline. If she knows she is going to be in trouble when she gets back to you then she will never want to come to you when called. As gmacleod said work with her, give her positive reinforcement and when she does come to you praise, praise, praise, and treat, treat, treat. Make her know that you are pleased and proud of her.

Ok,

I am really sorry you are having problems with your dog but 1) You are expecting too much too soon , not giving her any time at all to adjust. Dogs don't come ready trained and 2) You keep crossposting the same problems. Please stop doing that or you will be removed from the site. It is stated ni the rules you agreed to. If someone doesn't answer your first question then you need to bump that original post or wait unti they do and not keeping posting it all over to get a reponse. I have merged the two threads and please don't keep doing that.
