My older dog does this on occasion. She's been out and about in the house since she was a year old and she is almost 2 years now. She randomly tears stuff up while I'm gone. I come home, say her name is a VERY disappointing tone, and proceed to pick up what she destroyed while ignoring her completely. She feels terrible and proceeds to suck up to me all night long. She rarely does this because she doesn't like getting into trouble. I leave her with a treat ball full, kong, and random other toys out for her. She's pretty good, but occasionally pushes the limit.
