Why My Sofa?

We've just finished a very long 30 min. of "training" to stay off the sofa. Diablo's diligence is unbelievable for 4 months. He has a comfy bed, in the same room, why does he prefer MY furniture to nap on?

He's so cute, I'm tempted to leave him, but I know soon he'll be way too big. Plus, when people are over, do they really want to sit with Diablo or in his hair? My other fuzzy one never jumped on the furniture, is this something he'll grow out of???

why the sofa

If you've got any chance of getting him to stay off of the furniture do it now while he's still a pup. We thought it was cute when Dakota was a pup, now it's a real pain, always having an 80# dog trying to shove you out of your spot on the couch. good luck, stay with the obedience training.

I love having Jake on the sofa. I can shove my feet under his butt and they stay nice and warm. This is real nice in the winter when I come in from outdoors. He doesn't even flinch while my feet are finding a cozy spot under him. We do cover our couch with slip covers to protect it. When we have company, Jake is outdoors playing with the kids and if we have company with no kids he goes in his inside house (He has his own house inside our house). Otherwise, he has the run of the domain.

I read somewhere that it is because they want to be high up in ranking. If they're on the floor they are the lowest or something like that. Tess still sits on my husbands knee given half the chance.:D We are trying to stop Belle forming the habit but she looks so longingly at us it is so sad.:(

Hi jenniemitchell, Boy I blew it years ago, my boxer boys lay on the couch(sofa), recliner,(vibrating), and water bed all the time. I blew it when he was young. Until early this year I only had one boxer named Bugsylovicon, because he was alone with me, we sat together on the sofa or recliner all the time. When I went to work in the morning, he would spread out on the waterbed, in front of air conditioner and watch TV til I came home. He even would hit the switch on the vibrating recliner and lay on it. Finally I unplug it from the wall, I'd come home and he would meet at the door and the recliner would be buzzing away. I got Oskarevilicon early this year and I won't let him in bed, not enough room, so he lays next to it on his pillow. Maybe someday after Bugsy crosses rainbow bridge, Oskar may have bed rights. Years ago I had Afghans and I trained them as puppies no furniture. I would put mouse traps under newspapers on the sofa. When the Afghan pups would jump on sofa they set off the mouse traps. It didn't hurt them because of the newspapers on top, but it scared them enough to keep them off the sofa. Teach them young not to get on furniture and they will not go on the sofa. Or be like me and let them rule the roost. Ya gotta luv em'.

We made a half hearted effort to train our 9 month old not to lay on the couch. My 10 year old daughter Amy is the same as JohnM and loves to sneak her up and warm her feet! We have managed to train her no sofa without asking (putting her head on our laps and looking soppy) but when we go to bed she is on the couch about 10 minutes later :D

I keep towels on my sofa, there is no way they are going to stay off my furniture. I guess it bothers some people but it is my house and they are my dogs. We are buying some new furniture and we want a chaise lounger so THAT the dogs can have room to curl up. It is for my husband and know that a regular recliner would not be big enough for him and the two dogs but this way there will be room. We are crazy but happy!

You know, I never was very serious about keeping pets off the furniture - I grew up with dogs jumping up on the couch, so it's no big deal for me. I keep my furniture covered (and I even bought a king sized bed, for just me and the dogs, because we didn't fit on the queen). I guess I love having them sit or sleep next to me when I'm home - I also just recently stopped crating them, and they seem so happy with just hanging out, watching TV and snoozing on the sofa! :p

It makes me wonder what I ever did before I had boxers  I must have been very bored!

We're guilty too. Our dogs are allowed on the bed, the couch, you name it. It doesn't bother us and my guests know how much of an animal lover I am and if they don't like it they don't have to come over. Luckily we spend most of our time in the family room where we have leather furniture so the hair just wipes away ;) I do find them napping on the living room furniture occasionally but no harm done. My so's sister just got a cat a short time ago and to me really doesn't seem to be an animal lover. She freaked out when she found out our cats walked on our counters. Jason asked her if she honestly thought hers wasn't walking on her counters when she wasn't around  Life is too short to be freaked out over dog hair and slobber :D Live large and enjoy life as much as your dog does....

My hubby and I are GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY........I actually feel sad if she's not on the couch next to me :p While watching tv I just love to pet her and rub her soft ears :D Rayna also sleeps with us...I wouldnt have it any other way.....thank goodness for KING BEDS!!!

and my opinion about guests....if you dont like it on the couch...sit on the floor...and then lets see what happens to ya :D .....
