Why is she peeing on me?

Our new puppy Layla is 6 weeks old now. We got her at 5 weeks. Recently she has begun to lean up against me and then hike her leg like a male dog and pee on me!!! Why does she do this? She is closest to me in the family besides the kids, and she sleeps with my oldest son every night. Any clue why she has started this behavior? She is female so why would she hike her leg like a male dog?

Hi pcProvost & Layla & peeing on you, well bit of a worry but not really !!!!! sound crazy? well at 5 weeks she left her Mom far too early at that age Mom was still cleaning her up after toilet , well as you have become the Mom figure feeding etc, she has developed the way of telling her adopted Mom I want to pee & leans against you to let you know, O.K. action as soon as the leaning starts pop her outside & praise like crazy when she goes. Your baby should have been with her mother and litter mates for 3 more weeks. You may find yourself with many more challenges to come as they learn a LOT in those weeks that she missed out on. I think Pat hit the nail on the head with her behavior. I hope you find this board helpful in the weeks to come there's a lot of great information here. I agree with Pat and Vela....your puppy left her mother and litter way too young! I have my second boxer baby now, and would not take either of my babies prior to 10 weeks. They were both 12 weeks to the day when I got them, and many people were unsupportive of my decision to take them at a bit older age. One person actually told me my dog would have a hard time learning her name "at that age"! Sorry I don't have any advice to you, except I wish you luck!

Good Luck with Baby! I think Pat is on the right track. Angel came home at almost nine weeks so we really never had this sort of thing happen. Hang in there as Vela pointed out there may be a few more obstacles to overcome i.e. bite inhibition if you aren't already coping with that. Best of Luck.

Thanks for the fast reply, We were outside when she did this. And I found it odd that she hiked her leg. I thought only male dogs did this?

I didn't know until after I got her that I shouldn't have brought her home so early, nor should they have sold her so early. We did bring our female home at that age and I have never had a problem with her.

She has taken to the puppy well. Cleaning her and nosing her around, She has had a litter of puppies before and was a real good mom so hopefully she will teach little miss thing some manners . She does get a little testy with her when she tries to play but hopefully that will stop when she gets used to her.

Also one more question. My husband plays with her and she gets real rowled up. She will act like an attack killer dog. then stop and start kissing him. I can't tell if she is being agressive or if that is just how she plays. I'm not sure if he should be playing with her that way.

Any sugestions?

Both of my boxers have sounded like attack dogs while play growling. My Evie can be mistaken by those who do not know her as wanting to bite your arm off! She is just playing, play growling is not agression.

Boxer babies play very loudly. My 10 month old puppy will play roughly with my husband growling and barking and wooing but with the rest of us he plays differently. With the kids he's excitable but careful and with me he just brings toys and likes to snuggle. You will really have to teach her bite inhibition though as this is something she would have learned from her litter mates but didn't have the opportunity. Do a search for that and I'm sure you will come up with a lot of helpful info.
