Why is she eating poop in cage?

Our girl Stormie is 5 1/2 months old. She is housebroken. Not a problem. Yes, she is a poop eater : / Our vet gave us some special stuff to sprinkle on her food that makes her poop taste nasty. Or nastier! It seems to work ok. However...when we leave the house we put her in her crate. She may be in there from 30 minutes to at most 4 to 5 hours. Most days it is 30 minutes to 2 hrs. Not much. She seem to go in fine. Yes she is let out first. Yes she pees and poops. When we put her in her cage, we have her blanket in there, tv on softly for noise, a kong with peanut butter or another toy stuffed with a few treats so she has to work at getting it out. It usually takes her a good 15 to 25 minutes to mess with it. When we get home she is not crying or anything. Laying down like a sweet little girl. Well like a kid with cookie crumbs on his face....yuck! Even this morning! I left her for 20 minutes. With her "toy". By the time I got back, she had pooped and was eating it all again! What in the world! Yes she went before I left. No I didn't walk her first but that is because in the morning she likes to "relax" until at least 10 or so. It was only 7:30.
Why does she keep pooping in her cage and then eating it?
Trust me, she is fed well, played with, loved etc.....
HELP!

I know when Havoc was a puppy he would poop after eatting and then poop again 30 minutes later during our morning walk, so he would do 2 poops in the morning before we left for work. We don't have to crate him during the day often, but if DH couldn't take him for some reason I always made sure he pooped twice before putting him in the crate for any amount of time, that was just how his "poop schedule" was.

How often is this happening though? He shouldn't be pooping in his crate at all, does he perhaps have too much room in the crate? I know there are some medical conditions as well that may make him poop in his crate, worms and seperation anxiety are 2 that come to mind real quick. I know you say he likes to relax till 10, but maybe you have to force him out for a walk :). Personally I'd try walks in the morning before crating first and then I'd bring him to the vet if it doesn't improve.

Thank you both of you for helping me out! She is a double morning pooper too! If we were all that regular..... Anywho, I have not walked her right away in the am. Why? I've been to lazy. Looks like I better change my lifestyle too.
And thank for the article! That was very nice. It makes me so sad though to read some of that stuff and wonder how she was treated before we had her. We notice her cowering and reacting oddly in other situations that we are like, what the heck! We have never hurt you or will hurt you baby! Don't be afraid. Like bringing the mail up from the mailbox the other day, she got down and was almost shaking as I was walking toward her. My heart broke!
Again, thank you to you both for taking time to care for Stormie.:)

That just breaks my heart. Sounds like she's in a good place now - just be patient with her, I am sure she'll break away from her past soon enough. If you just ignore her cowering and fearfulness and carry on like nothing is wrong, she'll soon start to act that way herself. ;)

What kind of food and what brand do you feed your girl? I heard that if the dog does not get enough "quality" food, they will eat their poo to satisfy thier need. My dog was not housetrained until recenly (now he is 10 months old). If she has to poop and nobody is around to let her out she will do it in the crate. Sometimes I wish my dog would be able to know when weekends are but right on the dot of 7.00 he wants to go out for his first walk, after the walk he will come home and "relax".

We feed Stormie Science Diet puppy formula (she is almost 6 months old).
We are using For-bid right now. But maybe that Deter might work better.
She does like to hide things in general. I keep reading things about proper nutrition. Do you guys give you doggies any type of vitamin?

I think you should have a look at www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Science Diet is not the best quality food you can get for your dog. Perhaps you might want to look at the ingredients of Science Diet. With high quality food you don't need to give any vitamins and etc to your dog, they are all inside the food.

My 12 week old puppy just started yesterday picking up his poop and carrying it around. I have told everyone to pick up the poo-poo right away. It's really a gross thing, I don't want him to lick anyone after he's done that.
I'm hoping to stop him now BEFORE he gets the idea to eat it. YUCK!

I do have another dog who eats any poop she can find. It's rather disgusting. I don't know what to do about her. She's 12 years old. I just keep her in the yard away from other animal poop...she doesn't eat her own.

I couldn't figure out why I never had to clean the cat litter!! gross
