Brewster has definitely eaten the couch more than once. Haha, actually it was BF's couch (woops). He also used to break out of his crate all the time. However, I slowly got him adjusted to his crate. Now, he has proved himself halfway reliable, I don't crate him, but he likes to just go in there and hang out by himself for some quiet time even when I'm home. So, it does work, hang in there and good luck!

Now he's afraid of trucks

We purchased a crate this week end for Jet, but it's not going to work. He injured himself, tore 2 nails and there is no way he is going back in it. He hasn't torn anything else up, so we are going to try and confine him downstairs, (old furniture) when we have to leave him. This weekend he decided that trucks are bad. While walking him a pickup truck drove by and he went beserk. Cars are ok, but I have no idea why he is afraid of trucks all of the sudden. We walk him 5 -8 miles a day, but I don't know how to help him get over his truck issue. He's too strong for me when he goes crazy like that, yet I know that he needs the exersize. Has this happened to any one else and how to you get him over this fear?

Quick answer for getting over fear of trucks is go next to more trucks

Long answer:

If you see the truck coming get him to sit and stay as the truck passes act very calm and nonchalant and try not to acknowledge his uneasiness. After the truck passes and he is calm release him from the sit, assuming he is still sitting, and give him lots of praise for being calm. Another thing is as he is sitting and the truck is passing try to keep his attention on you rather than the truck, sometimes a treat will be enough for him to ignore the world.

IF you dont have time or you dont see the truck just act calmly like nothing is bothering you if he starts to act up ignore him and keep walking as he calms down then you can praise him.

Be careful and note when you are praising him make sure you are only praising him when he is doing the behavior you expect like being calm, If you try to console/praise him as he is excited you effectively teaching him being excited is what you want(I made this mistake for a long long time)

I hope that helps Keep us posted.
