Why hasn't my female gone into heat?

My female boxer is 16 months old and I have not observe her in heat. I have not seen any bloody discharge from her vagina since I bought her when she was 2months old. At about 9 months of age she did have a yellowish discharge from her vagina and I took her to the vet. This happend only once. The vet told me it was nothing to worry about. Now that she is getting older I am worried about the absence of her cycle. I have an appointment with the vet on my next payday, but was wondering if anyone else has encountered a problem similar to this.

I am assuming that you are going to be breeding her as to why you are waiting for her to go into heat?

The only reason I ask is because it is generally a good idea for health purposes to have them spayed before their first heat cycle.

If you do a search on this Forum you will be able to find out more about the health risks.

Sorry I have no advice for you as to why she has not went into heat yet.

If you want to discuss anything relating to breeding on this site, you need first to furnish the site owner with copies of the results of your health screening. Obviously you won't have done any of that yet - since your bitch is too young for any testing to be conclusive. For your future reference, however, the basics of what is required before any dog can be bred can be found at www.boxerworld.com/health_testing

As for your question on heat cycles - it's normal enough. The *normal* time range for boxer bitches to have their first heat is 7-24 months. So if she still hasn't had a heat by 24 months or so, then it's time to think about being concerned. You might also find out from her own breeder what age her mother and any other close female relatives had their first cycles - it's hardly foolproof, but these things tend to run in families, so could give you a rough idea of what to expect.

If you have to wait for payday to afford a vet appointment, I'm afraid you are in for a surprise when it comes to breeding. Breeding and raising pups is no cheap undertaking.

I SO SO agree if you have to wait until payday to visit the vet you should go ahead and spay. Breeding a dog is not the cash crop you think it is going to be. Even if you bypass all the health tests there are so many hidden costs.

Save yourself future health problems and spay her your next pay check.

I have to agree, if you have to wait for payday to bring her for a check up, breeding is not a good idea, so many things can happen, emergency c-sections, illness, whelping problems, no milk productions, proper nutrition for a pregnate female and growing pups and the list goes on.
Unless this dog is active in conformation showing or working titles there is no reason to breed her. There are thousands of homeless boxers all over the world, I dont think it is ethical to potentially add to the problem.
Please consider spaying her.
So many benifits to spaying and neutering.

I hate to jump on the band wagon here but not only the costs of things mentioned above but check into how much it will cost you to do the genetic health tests on your dog. I totally agree if the dog is not being shown in conformation you need to spay her. I don't want you too feel as though we are gaining up on you it's just the responsible thing to do.

IMO,if you have to ask about when a bitch should go into heat you DEFINITELY need to educate yourself more BEFORE even considering getting into a breeding program.......not to mention expense. PLEASE go ahead and spay your dog. You'll be decreasing to chances of her developing cancer and other health issues as well as a possible unwanted litter of "mutts"-which there are already far too many of.
