I am having a problem with my 3 yr old boxer Mackenzie, I can't take her around any other dogs, she sees them and becomes very aggressive. She even beats up her brother Rebel on occasion. What can i do to prevent this?

Is she a rescue? How did you socialize her?

Also - do you practice "NILIF"? This way the dog doesn't think they are the leader of the pack - they respect that you are. You may want to seek the assistance of a behavorist.

Why..

No Mackenzie isn't a rescue, we've had her from 8 weeks old.. What is "NILIF"
I haven't heard of this before...

Nothing in Life is for Free - you can search it on the Internet or here is a good link <http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/nilif.pdf>.

Basically it is a way for you to set boundaries and rules for our dog so your dog doesn't rule you.

The way I have put it into practice is that Chloe has to sit and stay before eating - she cannot eat until we release her from the stay. We also make her walk before she eats - so she is "working" for her food. She has to sit and stay until she gets anything - leash put on, a toy thrown, a treat, etc.

Anyway - once the dog sees you as the leader of the pack - she will be less likely to fight with the other dog in the house to "fight" over the dominance in the house - because you are the clear leader. You can also seperate them when you are not home.

Again - I would seek the advise from a professional behavorist on the fear aggression.

Take her places, especially if there are other dogs there, for instance, go to the vets office, just to visit, there is almost always someone in the waiting room. Pet stores, parks, Lowes, etc.

Napoleon was really bad when I first got him, he would growl at everybody, animals and humans. We started making weekly trips to Petsmart and the vets. He would see other dogs, but not interact with them, eventually, he learned they were not a threat to him. It takes a lot of patience and time but the payoff is great. Don't scold her if she growls, just correct her gently and reward her when she is good.

Good Luck!

NILIF Training is interesting..

I read Simmons post on the NILIF and dove into the internet for what it really is all about. I have a 2 week adopted Boxer. He does show fear aggression toward grownups. But its weird. One woman in our neighborhood, he met, and she petted him, with tail wagging and everything. She owns dogs herself. But men she definitly has a problem with. It seems like he is selective. So its hard to gauge. Last night my 20 year old daughter who is living alone, came to visit. She hasnt met my Foreman yet. She knocked at the door, and since she used to live with me, she came in. Foreman, barked and growled.. and took a bit of time to trust her. It came to the point at one time, I scolded him, and sent him out the back yard. I let him in after a time, and by the end of the night, he was snuggling with my daughter and wanting her to play. Like I said, he is hard to gauge. I also have a 10 year old daughter, that he never seems to want to play rough with.. always gentle loving and kisses. SHe has a friend that he has no problem with when she comes in.

I did read the part about always initiating the play, and never let him initiate the play. That makes sense to me. We have another dog, who is very mellow, and loves to be petted. So me and the whole family are used to that.

I have Foreman setup to take Obedience lessons, but that doesnt start for another month. I would like to get a head start on training Foreman, especially in the fear aggression part. But I do know that if I do this, I will get a negative reaction from my family members, for upon reading it, I can understand that it seems mean to make your dog, work for every little thing in its life. But I do grasp the concept. Maybe I need to do more research, but if anyone could share their successes with me, I sure would appreciate it!
