Why do the vets have a problem with Homecooking and Raw Diet???

I haven't broached this subject with my vet yet, who I found out yesterday is a boxer owner. I'm sure it will come up at some point soon, though I do a combination diet of Wellness puppy food and raw ground meats. I'd suspect that some are concerned about our ability to provide all the nutrition a dog needs, and some are sold into a certain kibble brand just like some docs push certain prescriptions. As long as your dog is healthy and happy, I'm not sure what the issue is.

My experience with my vet and homecooking

When I took Bud in late in June for mass cell tumor removal I told my vet I had started homecooking for my two boxers. She was all for it! Even had some receipes for me when I picked him up that night. Love my vet!!

Hi ya'll.. I've been reading and thinking about giving Ace homecook meal.
Is there any sites or books I should read up on?

Dr Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats is a good place to start - lots of homecooking recipes in that one (and lots of other good information as well). Also, the whole dog journal has done some recent features on the subject.

Too many vets have that attitude and of course most of the sell and recommend Science Diet.

My vet feeds, sells and recommends raw. He just opened a new clinic/complex with every great food available.

Your very lucky!!! You should have seen the look on everyone's face when I even mentioned the word "raw" :eek:

Because vets are doctors, not nutrionists and nutrition is not a mandatory part of completing their DVM. Any classes that are offered are usually voluntary and are sponsored by the makers of Science Diet and Hills. Go figure.

Sometimes I have the feeling that the vet gets some money out of the company like Science Hill or Yukanuba, as they always recommend those to me. I grew up with about 15 dogs in Thailand, that time there was no kibbles. I remember only my father cooking meat, vegetables, rice for the 15 dogs daily and each day they got some bones to chew. They lived thru-out my childhood. I cannot remember them getting really ill.
