Molly is a 3 year old boxer girlie. She appeared to have a fit? of some sort tonight. She keeled over and lost control of her bladder and bowel. When she came round she was a little strange and really clingy. This has never happened before and as its bank holiday weekend I cant get to the vets till tuesday. She was really clingy all day today and got tired out quickly when she was out for her walk. Im really concerned about her. After eating she has gone into a deep sleep. Is there something I can be doing to help her just now?

Sound to me like she had a seizure. I wouldn't take her out for long walks to do much with her until you can get her seen by a vet. If she does it again I would see about finding an Emergency Vet.

It sounds like it could have been a seizure OR heart related. Our peanut had BCM and enlarged heart, and it was diagnosed when she had what looked like a seziure, but was more of a fainting episode and they can lose control of bladder . It looked like she was gasping for air, she fell onto her side and looked like a fish out of water. it would last only seconds and then she would be mostly back to normal, although clincy and tired for awhile. i owuld definitely dicsuss this with your vet as well asthe possibility of a seizure. they can do heart workups, EKGS/ xrays etc and holter monitor (we never used this for peaniut as it was not necessary but it is helpful bc. i think the dogs wearit for 24 hours and that gives a more reliable result.) if this is her heart, there rae very good meds that can help. peanut was on sotalol for over a year and lived very normally during that time.

in the meantime i would be careful about not exerting her much. you said she got very tired when on walk, and that too makes me think that you should make sure the vet looks at her heart. did you notice when that happened any changes in color in her gums (peanuts did become grayish white when this happened, and over time as her heart got more sick).
I would consider an emergency vet if you see any other changes, or if this happens again.
give her lots of loves and keep her quiet. Please keep us posted and i will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

Hi Guys,

Scary stuff!! I fear my 14 month dog Barley has the same problem :( He has on two occasions collapsed and wet himself, the last time was about six weeks ago, we rushed him to the vets but nothing wrong was found?? He is a very fit looking dog who eats well and takes plenty of excersize so we were really shocked and scared to death when he flopped on the floor, I checked the house and garden for anything he may of eaten but nothing, the more I read the threads on this forum the more I realise this seems too common in boxers.
I just hope it never happens again......Fingers crossed!!

Babygirl,

I hope Molly Turns out to be fine, If I gain any insite into this problem I'll pass it on to you.

Good Luck

You also may want to get the thyroid checked along with the heart stuff. My dog was diagnosed with early stages of cardiomyopathy. My breeder recommended getting the thyroid checked. Turned out it was low. I read that it can cause arrythmia's, seizures, etc. The whole reason this all started was because I went to the vet with my dog, who was having head tremors. They did an EKG and found arrythmia's. My dog is also on sotolol and soloxine. He is only a year and a half. Hope you find out what is happening, but the thyroid is another avenue to look at.

Hi all

I am praying for all of your babies and families. I hope you can get a proper diagnosis asap and get the tx going.

peanut was also very active. we live in the mountains and hike often, she was always healthy as far as we knew and could see. she was diagnozed with the heart problems in Dec 2003 after turning 5. She went to the bridhe on 2-15, but again the sooner you diagnose the better as dogs can and do live normal lives with the help of meds out there.

She had her first episode when we were getting her leash to go out, and she got excited. Her second episode was before we saw the vet (or maybe literally it was right after) when the UPS man came and walked in our foyer. Of course she got excited and this time did not fall all the way over, but her four legs started to splay out and she managed to catch herself and we got her and calmed her down. These did happen on and off during the initial month or so that we were trying to treat, as we started sotalol for a month, an dthen we stopped it as recommmended to run more tests and see if there was a difference, but she had another episode or two within a week so we started her back on the meds and kept her on them foir over a year. this past xmas i noticed her slowling signofocantly on walks and occassional vomitting. we did another ekg for the sake of it since it had been a year and they found her heartw as more enlarged and arythmia. we added a stronger med along with the sotalol for the last month or so, and she was happy and had good qulaity of life. it was only the last few weeks that she declined rapidly. She was 6 +. I hope this info does not upset you too much, but rather gives you lots of info and questions to take to the vets while they try to see whats going on.

please keep us posted. i keep you all in my thoughts and prayers and know that you have our peanut angel watching over your babies here on earth now. !
