Who has a huge boxer?

My Cooper is 5.5 yrs old...108 lbs and 27 inches tall.
He has always been a big boy and we are now working on DIETING and he is not impressed. I thought when I got Arley he would lose weight and instead he has gained:eek:
Arley is 17 months old 86 lbs and 27 inches tall and it looks like his chest is filling out, the vet said he will gain about 5 more pounds before he is done growing.
I did not care how big or small my boys were when I got them, I got them because I just fell in love with them, I was actually hoping for MED size but I love them just as much either way and I just got more of them to love now:D

Sorry, I am a bad boxer mom as I have no pics in my gallery yet.
I will work on that this weekend.

Nobody is discriminating against large dogs (my male is 84 # at about 25") - but they are not correct when they are that large and there are serious health and breed considerations when people intentionally breed for out of standard size.

This has always confused me.

Jackson has just turned one and weighs 40 kg (equates to a little over 85 lbs). To me, this doesnt sound or seem right.

Whilst Jackson is quite broad, he still has to fill out quite a lot.

What do you guys think - is the conversation of weight right?

your weight converson is correct. And your boxer is a bit bigger than the standard, but I would guess that being in Austrailia you have a European Boxer and they tend to be bigger than the satandard more often that the American boxer. Also, remember that a boxer may be heavier than the standard without necessarily being bigger than the standard. If your dog is overweight, you can diet him/her, whereby getting back to a healthy weight/size.

Thank you for your reply bezell - that helps explain it now.

We never got to see Jackson's father when we picked him up from the breeder, but his mother seemed quite big for a female - maybe he is following in her footsteps.

Jack definately is not overweight - I actually thought he was a little skinny as you can see his ribs. But by what I have read on the boxerworld site this is quite normal. He never seems to be begging for more food.

Whilst walking the other day I got chatting to a lady who had previously owned boxers - she said that it looked as though Jackson had 'wardrobe' (not sure of the spelling) in him. Does that make any sense to you or anyone else?

I'm surprised, though, to hear you say that Boxers from European countries tend to be bigger than the standard more often than Boxers from America - I really would have thought it was the other way around. I constantly hear of 90-100 lb. and 28" tall Boxers in the US. We have a "super-size" mentality in this country!

Wardrobe was (is?) a kennel in the UK, they exported several dogs to Australia in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

It is nice to hear comments regarding breed standard. We all love our boxers regardless of size- I don't think anyone would question that. A boxer is a boxer which equals a great dog. But I am sick and tired of people saying that my dog is small when she is breed standard. She is 6mo's 20 inches and about 35 lbs. I imagine she will finish around 55lbs. There are too many people that breed for huge dogs and give the public the idea that boxers are huge. Not to mention the health problems that large dogs have. The breed standard was created for a reason.

That may be true, but the American Boxer tends to be more streamlined, and have a deeper taper to the waist from the chest, than the European Boxers. Also, the chest isn't as deep or as wide, and their bones aren't as large (boney), all leading to less weight. However, these are generalizations. This is just what I have learned from talking to the AB and EB breeders I talked to while researching the breed. I am quite sure there are other opinions as there are too many breeders/ owners to have everybody think the same way.

Many Australian Boxers have Wardrobes behind them

Below are the heights and weights of Boxers around the world, as per the Breed Standard. There is some variation between countries. I've nothing against a bigger Boxer (as long as they are not just overweight - some people do mistake weight for 'size'), or a smaller Boxer - they are still Boxers and all wonderful Layla just scrapes the female standard, and Ruben is at the large end of the male standard.

I would be very worried, however, about a 'breeder' promoting large or small Boxers as a selling point :eek:

Dogs: 57 - 63 cms (22.5 - 25 ins ).
Bitches: 53 - 59 cms ( 21 - 23 ins).
Weight:
Dogs: Approx. 30 - 32 Kg. (66 - 70 Lb )
Bitches: Approx. 25 - 27 Kg (n 55 - 60 Lb ).

Australia
Dogs: 56-61 cm (22-24 ins) at the withers.
Bitches: 53-58.5 cm (21-23 ins) at the withers.
Heights above or below these figures not to be encouraged.

Canada
Adult males - 22 1/2 - 25 in. (57 to 64 cm). Females - 21 to 23 1/2in. (53-60 cm) at the withers. Males should not go under the minimum nor females over the maximum.

FCI
Height at the withers : Dogs : 57-63 cm.
Females : 53-59 cm.
Weight : Dogs : over 30 kg when height at withers is ca 60 cm.
Bitches : about 25 kg when height at withers is ca 56 cm.

New Zealand
Dogs: 55.8 - 60.9 cm (22 - 24 in) at the withers Bitches: 53.3 - 58.4 cm (21 - 23 in) at the withers Heights above or below these figures not to be encouraged. Dogs around 58.4 cm (23 in) should weight about 29.9 kg (66 lb) Bitches of about 53.3 cm (21 in) should weight about 28.1 kg (62 lb).
