White boxers are boxers too...

Apart from my problems with Cassius having fits (see my other posts) I think he is gorgeous ! Ok, so it's a biased opinion, but I don't care. I had breeders begging me to breed with him, and before all you puritans jump on me, I won't breed with him. However, the breeder did tell me that if he was "normal" he'd be a champion. Having said all that, none of that matters - I think he is gorgeous, I love him and wouldn't swop him for any other "normal" derivative ! When my son was born I didn't first check that he was pink with purple spots - I loved him instanteously ! White boxer, brown boxer, tartan-coloured boxer, who cares ? Boxers are boxers and we own and love them for that ! When my wife's little pavement-special finally passes on the happy hunting ground (stop growling at me Randall, you are old !) I will get another boxer, and I WONT check his colour first ! If he chews my new shoes, slobbers in my face, barks at the birds, sits on the cat, whines at the monkeys, he's got a new owner, regardless of what colour God decided to paint him !

Again please refrence your information. Many breeders culled their white Boxers because they did not meet the standard. The probability of white Boxers increases when Boxers are bred for flash. The registration of Boxers is done by the AKC, white Boxers are not eligible for conformation but they can compete in obedience. Any responsible breeder would only allow a limited registration on a white Boxer so that it could not produce puppies that could be registered.

I know I am getting on this one kind of late. I am always amazed when people quote rules for being a "responsible breeder". I am a member of the American Boxer Club. I do not register my White Boxer pups but place them as pets on a written spay/neuter contract to good homes. It is true the ABC did not allow in their COE for a breeder to place white puppies in the past. They were not told to cull, but they were given no other option short of keeping the white pups for themselves. But does the fact I personally do not register my whites mean I am being irresponsible?

Also, I do not breed for "flash". I breed to the AKC/ABC Boxer Breed Standard with Conformation and Health being my main goals. A quality Boxer does not have to have white markings to be quality. I have a plainly marked boy who is just one Major shy of his AKC Championship. Of course I tend to use Champions in my breedings and they are usually flashy marked. But their markings really have no bearings on my ultimate desire to breed a sound Boxer that hopefully will be able to compete towards their Championship.

Out of my last litter where I bred two of my Champion kids, I had one white male named Moose. Moose's owner has just applied for her ILP so she can go for his CD. She has titled many Boxers over the years and I am thrilled to know I will be watching him compete in the near future!

Hmmm...just thinking about this whole color issue. It is interesting quote:

"The practice of putting down white puppies started during the war, when food was rationed; any dog that could not be used as a war dog would not get a food ration. White Boxers, being highly visible at night, were unsuitable for war dog work. It was either put them down at birth or let them starve. The practice was continued after the war, and somewhere along the way the myth that whites are less healthy got started (my opinion is that someone wanted to ease their guilty conscience)."

I wonder what effect it would have had on the breed had the war been held during a snow storm in the Arctic! LOL

Understanding fully that my baby would never be a proper brood mommy, I registered her with the AKC. The AKC only cares that both parents are registered. I understand why the breed standard excludes dogs like her from the show ring and gene pool, but I still think she deserves to be counted amongst her peers. She is a healthy, hearing white boxer, and I think part of the reason these white dogs have a bad rep is that "bad" news travels better than good.

Wow

I am thankful for the large amount of knowledge I learned in such a short period of time. My friend is a breeder of Dobermans and taught me a lot about the banning of the white Doberman, but I didn't know other breeds faced this as well. I had met a white boxer at an AKC Agility trial in Maine named Justice and the handler told me that he was named Justice because of the pratice of putting down white boxers. I really think they are great looking dogs :D

Wow---I was surprised to find this old thread had been recently responded to. And since my original post was sooooo many months ago, I wanted to add an addition.

That plainly marked fawn boy I referred to back in December is now a Champion! Markings have nothing to do with the Conformation of a Boxer and Speaker has definitely proven that.

Here are photos of my beautiful classic fawn boy:

Also, as an addition, in my Champion sire/dam litter of last year, there was a very striking plainly marked fawn male. Unfortunately he only dropped one testicle and decided to retain the other, just out of reach. But you can see photos of him and see he is also a very pretty boy :)

It's a little bit different in Dobes because that is a form of albinism and it does carry some health problems with it (and the parent club actually researched the coloring to find out these things instead of assuming....;) )

I had met a white boxer at an AKC Agility trial in Maine named Justice and the handler told me that he was named Justice because of the pratice of putting down white boxers.

Justice was High in Trial at the National last year, I think, in Agility. He made the front page of the local paper and everything! Sadly, he went to the Bridge a few months ago :(

Oh god, I never knew Justice went to the bridge! He was a great boxer and was one of the reasons I became interested in Boxers in the begining!!

Maybe I'm just a bit dense, but I just realized that "cull" means "kill." Was "cull" used in leiu of "kill" because it sounds better?
