White Boxer Pup Has Dark Red Spots on body?

Hello everyone!

So our 5 1/2 month old white boxer has developed wierd spots on his skin. We dont see him itching them or licking them. I have looked closely at them and have seen teeny tiny scabs (vet said it would be from the a hair falling out) the vet didnt seem to really know what it was and the best he could say was give him a bath and see if it goes away or gets worse and then bring him back him.

Can it be heat spots? rashes? allergy? Dry skin from the cold? (we live in montreal and it goes into the very low minuses here)

maybe this is common for white boxers? or maybe its normal and because hes white we see every little thing?

we will try giving him a bath today, but any of your opions would be great.Or if anyone has experienced the same thing?

Sounds like it could be any one of those things. I'd also have a skin scraping done to make sure it isn't sarcoptic mange or something like that given the hair falling out. Could also be allergies, my boy got whelts on him that scabbed and he never itched when he had food allergies.

What food do you feed?

we hope its not mange :s

we feed him orijin red, we dnt think it would be an allergy to that because hes been on it for a while now...

we really hope it isnt mange!we have been researching more and more and he seems to be getting these spots where they say mange appears(like his forearms and theres one on the top of his head)


we will try washing him today and hope it helps a bit.

It depends on what sort of mange you're talking about. Demodectic mange is not itchy, sarcoptic mange is extremely itchy (and whilst both are called mange due to the overall effect of hair loss, that is the singular similarity between the two - they're actually VERY different problems).

Can you describe his spots a bit more thoroughly? Location, appearance, where they started & how they've spread, etc. Pictures wouldn't hurt either, if you have somewhere to upload those online. What you've posted so far doesn't give any indication that it might be an infestation of sarcoptic mites (or indeed, mange of any sort), but you haven't really given a great deal of info to work with either, so I wouldn't automatically rule that possibility out.

so basically we noticed one maybe two weeks ago and we noticed that a few more have appeared...they seem to be more on his front shoulders..when i try and separate the hair to see them better it looks almost like a miniscule scab formed at the root of the hair...

they dont seem to bother him at all, no itching or licking and when i touch them hes fine.

i was reading about mange and i read that dust mites may also contribute to it?we just moved into a new place and there is alot of dust, we are planning on getting a hepa filter very soon.

could it be the dust accumalted on his bed caused these?we just gave him a bath and i have washed all his blankets and doggie bed from his kennel.

what do you think about the picture?if you need a better one we will take more

Thanks From the appearance and location (and lack of other typical symptoms), I would not suspect that it is a case of sarcoptic mange. I'd also be a bit sceptical about demodecic mange - but much less definitively so (i.e. I think it is still worth asking your vet to take a skin scraping for that one).

Since it doesn't itch though, I wouldn't immediately assume that the cause is any sort of allergy (it's possible, but not classical). My general thoughts would tend toward either bug bites, or some dermatological problem. Little scabs like that could also airse from small scrapes/scrathes - I know it's winter and you're in a cold part of the world, but does he spend much time outdoors in the yard? What I'm wondering about is whether there's a possibility of little scrapes occuring from him rooting about in shrubs, etc.

after his bath we have noticed that the hair has come out a little bit in some places of these little spots...

we have another vet appointment on saturday if it hasnt cleared up we will definatly ask for a scraping.(if it gets worse we will take him sooner)

we do walk him everyday(except when it is ridicuously cold then we have had to skip) when we do walk him he tends to stay on the sidewalk where the snow has been plowed, and in our back yard he only really goes for a quick pee or poo and the snow is maybe up to his elbows?
we have taken him to the dogparc a few times when the weather was a bit "warmer" and he does play a little rough with the big dogs...and the snow does freeze because it is so cold so that could be a possibility...

Do they salt/sand the roads and sidewalks?
One of my dog has reaction to the salt/sand mix.
Maybe after you walk him, rub him with a cold damp towel to remove any sand/salt mix.. just an idea?
