whining

Trinity is almost 15 weeks, and this is her 4th week with crate training. The first few weeks were terrible, she would cry and whine, we could here her all the way in our garage. Then she would start to bark, and not the cute little whimper bark, she was all our barking She would fight me to go in her crate, try to stick her head or her paw out of the door while I was trying to close it. And it would take her a long time to settle down in her crate. Since last Friday it has gotten so much easier! She hasn't put up a fight to go in, and she settles down as soon as she goes in, and she hasn't been crying either! Hang in there, I'm sure your pup will get used to it. :cool:

I took Andi's advice and put treats in the crate with Jade everytime I put her in, now she sees the treats come out of the closet and she goes right over to the crate! and its only been 2 days! I thought she would cry horribly when I put her in at night but I put a few treats in, she eats them then lays down and I dont hear from her till early morning.
It really was good advice, Thanks Andi.

they call it "crate bait" for a reason! ( :

the other really important thing to do is to make some things "crate only treats." for our dogs, they ONLY get peanut butter, kongs, yogurt, big cookies and other fun stuff while they are IN the crates. all we have to say is "kennel up!" and they RUN into their crates and wait expectantly. this makes crates a good place to be, not just a cage they get locked in- which is the name of the game.

Is it possible that some pups can't be crate trained? Darwin is seven months and we've been at this since two months to no avail despite taking every bit of advice on this board. I tried the "crate only" treat, but treats are ignored if he is in the crate. As soon as I let him out, he goes and gets his treat though. He usually eventually calms down, but he's generally peed in the crate first. Argh.

Welcome to BW! You have some to the right place. Also welcome to puppyhood... It is so much like having a newborn baby when they are young. Ignore the whining, and do not give in. In the middle of the night if the puupy whines take him out without any interaction from you. If you interact then the puupy will begin to think that potty breaks are fun. My puppy is 4 months old now and will still try to whine just a little sometimes. He realizes quickly that it is still futile and gives up. Good luck, and enjoy you baby!!!
