Bailey will be three months old in a couple of days. At the moment she is on Natural Balance Ultra - her stools are pretty soft, she has been on this for a month and a half now. Her stools are also pretty large for such a wee dog (sorry for the graphic visual). I have been reading and see that a few people feed Merrick. (I did try Canidae and she won't touch it). Which Merrick formula should I try? Also, is there a concern over the recall they had a while back? I think it was the Canadian version Go Natural and then they got a plant here and it is now called Merrick? Quite confusing, but am willing to try it and see, just not sure which one to get first. Many thanks

also - forgot to ask do you add canned in as well or just feed the kibble.

thanks in advance

Merrick is #1 in my book

I'm a huge Merrick fan ;) It's up to you if you want to feed the Puppy Plate until your pup is a certain age. I personally fed puppy food until about 6 months of age & then switched to the adult formula. I feed kibble mixed with canned. Merrick has a huge variety of flavors available in kibble & matching canned. I feed a mixture of flavors to keep things interesting for my 2. I'll buy a 30lb bag of the kibble (rotating flavors each time) and every week or so feed a different flavor of canned. This also helps to see if there's a certain food that your dog can't tolerate. So far we haven't had any problems with allergies or anything.

Merrick is a wonderful food, we rescued a boxer in early October & you should see his coat now !!! When he came to us he was being fed some generic WalMart brand dog food called Ol' Roy, his coat felt like straw & was very dull. He had eye boogers & was very underweight. We've had him 3 weeks & you wouldn't believe he's the same dog !!! He's gained about 10lbs, his coat is glossy & as soft as can be, I'm a firm believer in feeding a premium food. Plus, the better the quality of food you feed the less they poop...

I don't think Merrick and Go Natural are the same thing, or in fact, related in any way at all.

Go Natural is produced by a Canadian company called Petcurean (who also make the Foundations and Summit ranges of pet foods). Yes, there was a "voluntary" recall on their products in 2003. But I haven't heard anything bad about them since. They're far from the first dog food manufacturer to have recalls ;)

Merrick is a US company - and apparently a family owned business. Here's their website: http://www.merrickpetcare.com/about_us/

As for which Merrick formula to choose - how about rotating between them? Variety in the diet is good for dogs - they're no more designed to eat the same thing day in and day out than people are.

Boxer Pal
thank you

Thank you for the replies, sorry, I must have got confused with the Merrick and the Go Natural. I did a google on Merrick and it came up with the Go Natural so I do apologise. I think I will go out tomorrow and have a look at what they have, I really think she is pooping way too much on this food. Thanks a bunch for replying so quickly.

Your little one sounds a lot like my little one. He is also and picky eater and would turn his nose up to certain foods. We also dealt with the diarrhea and itching thing and the only food to do the trick is Merrick "Puppy Plate". It is small kibble with peas and some veggies. He loves it. My Butch is 17 weeks old so I plan on keeping him on the puppy food for a little while longer. It's sold in the smaller pet stores and we only do the kibble.
Good luck. Let us know how you make out.
