Where you got your boxer

I purchased my first boxer from an ad in a local newspaper. Not always a good idea. I really started researching the breed after I had my first boxer.

In the process of researching the boxer breed I went to dog shows and noticed my boxer was not exactly the same quality as those in the ring. Although my first boxer was terrific. I wanted a better quality dog for it's buddy and our second dog.

I purchased a cool book, The New Boxer by Billie McFadden (1989) and read it with much delight. In addition to describing very eloquently the character, history, standard and care of the boxer - Billie highlighted some of the current boxer kennels.

To my surprise one of the listed boxer kennels was close to my home here in California. I was impressed with the write-up on this particular kennel and the picture of her champion male. I called information in the city where her kennel was, gave her name and asked for the telephone number.

She was a kind as those people here on BoxerWorld. She invited me to her home and everyone of the four boxers I've purchased since has been with her blessing. It is worth the effort to do your research first and hopefully make better informed decisions on any purchase. However, it is even more important when considering a live, loving, life companion who just happens to be a dog.

I think I'm pretty lucky for picking up Billie's book - which years later she was kind enough to sign for me - and for meeting a wonderful boxer pal whose guidance with the breed has helped me immensely.

I never thought I'd purchase a boxer off the internet. We live in NE Pennsylvania. The breeder lives in Oxford, PA which is down towards Lancaster, PA. It was a long ride - but well worth the trip. I had seen photos of Champ that the breeder e-mailed to me and talked with her through e-mails and by phone for about a month before we took the trip to pick him up. We were very pleased with the whole setup she had and we saw all the other boxers there also. I am really thinking of getting another boxer - everyone here has so much fun with 2. I'd like to adopt an older boxer who needs a home this time around.

We got Harley from a BYB, but I hadn't found BW at the time, so I hadnt been enlightened yet.

I knew I wanted a boxer for a long time. My parents having a Female when I was little. She was AKC registered and was being shown for conformation, to later be bred. However, when My parents, being in the military, were stationed in Germany, they Gave Chelsea to family in CT, who had her fixed for fear of another dog getting to her... Anyways..

After moving to GA from Tx, I did a little more research about breeders in our area. I really liked the lady we got Harley from, her setup was nice, all of her puppies were well spoiled with love and care. Harleys parents were beautiful! However, I didnt research enough to find that it is unethical to breed a white female, and thats what Harley's mama was. Although the breeders reasons for doing this seemed justifiable at the time, I later found that noe reputable breeder would even consider breeding a white female.

But, we got our boy, and he was very healthy! Never a problem with him, he was updated on shots and everything. And we LOVE him! Esp. little Trista, he's really her doggie!

Next time around I will definatly go to a reputable breeder. I am planning of finishingmy degree in Animal Science and once things settle I would like to get into conformation showing and possibbly breeding, but not unless I can guarantee it would be done the right way.

We bought Daisy from a reputable breeder in Atl; Tokalon Kennels. She was been showing Boxers since 1953 and she only breeds about once every 2 years. We got lucky finding her when we did. Daisy's dad at one time was the 4th ranked Boxer in the US, as of last year I believe he is the 7th. Her dad is Ch Kami~Ko N' Kini's Simply Raja (Simon for short). Her mom is Tokalon's Charisma (Digger) who is an agility dog.

Like you, I didn't realize the troubles you may run into when buying from byb's. I thought people that bought registered dogs were suckers. I wasn't going to show my dog so who cares if he has papers.

Luckily, we happened to find Vegas' breeders very close to my parents house. Since they were so close we thought we should check them out. After seeing their dogs and talking to them, it became very clear why someone would want to buy from a reputable breeder. Their dogs were awesome! They could answer any questions we threw at them and filled us in on a lot of information we never even thought of. Then I found Boxerworld and got even more information on byb's. That pretty much clinched it for us.

Ikaika and Mailani both came from my friend. Her two boxers had puppies and I got one from each litter. Belle is fixed now (good thing). My friends were not in it for the money either, it just happened. Regardless, they were considered a BYB.

If it had been anyone else but my friends whom I have known for many many years, I would not have gotten either one of them. My next baby will definately be a Rescue or from a breeder who does testing.

I like many people found BW late in the stage. So I have learned a lot from everyone here.

Well, my first instinct was to grab the local paper and check out the puppies for sale ads, the same way my family had always done since I was little. I was uninformed. But my sister and her husband had recently gotten a dobie sired by RepoMan so I realized there was another, better way to get a dog. She told me to go to some dog shows, which started me on my quest. I did internet research, emailed and telephoned breeders, went to shows and introduced our family, generally trying to find out when a pet puppy might be available. It took me about six months, but I was lucky to get Scrapper; he is a Pawprint baby from Christina, and the two flashy boys from his litter were champions at an early age. I would have shown Scrapper - by then the showring bug was biting me too - but Mother Nature decided no; he only got one descended testicle. He is the most wonderful dog lovicon you couldn't ask for better!

Oskar is from the most wonderful breeder! She's been breeding for 25 years. I found her through the Boxer club of WNY. She happens to be the secretary.
