Sam stays in our huge (50 yards across) backyard. There is plenty of shade and endless water. I'm looking for a kid's plastic pool (he bit the blow up one kind and deflated it--silly dog!) However, he does get bored and digs so we should try to corner off a section of the yard. But to watch him run as fast as he can round and round the big tree---I'd hate to take that away from him. We'd like to have a pool someday so we haven't landscaped very much. It's pretty much "his" backyard for the time being. But if the weather is bad or extremely cold he stays in his crate.

I guess I am lucky

I usually take my baby with me. (unless it is an extended trip) I work outdoors doing tree grinding and land clearing so keeping Darien by my side all day is no problem. I just make sure to have him on his retractable leash and he has plenty of room to romp and play. And when I can't be there, my fiance is usually home to keep him out of trouble.

Capone is let loose in the house. If we are gone longer than 6hrs I put him in doggy daycare. We only have had one problem just last week capone had to stay at the vet for the am and got mad when he got home and the kid were gone and i went back to work so he took all the rubbish out of the bag and spred it aroud the house even the light bulbs that were in there he carry to the living room fun mess to pick !!! but this was the first time he ever got in the rubbish in the year we have had him. hopely the last !!:(

The crate thing just isnt for us....so what we do is....we live in a town house kinda thing lol....anyway I dont know why but the kitchen is huge....and it goes out to the back yard area with a slidding glass door. So we block off the kitchen with a tall gate, and they have the kitchen with a bed, food, and water....of course lots of toys. And they can go in and out as they please.

Once in a while hubby and I will get off work early and sneek in the house, and its so sweet to see them out side sun bathing. That makes up feel great!

We too have a padlock on the gate, and our neighbor says home all day. So he keeps an eye on everything for us.

This time of year, mine go out in the mornings, while it is still cool, then they come in for the rest of the day - with a trip out at lunch time. Plus, I usually let them out for a while in the evenings, too, after things cool down. They get a little frustrated sometimes when they can't have their outside time because of the weather. Inside, they have the run of the living room, kitchen/dining room, and hallway. We close off the bedrooms and bathrooms. We do have to pick up the trashcan and put it up high, though, because if there is anything that smells interesting in there - Lexy will investigate. By the time we get our next one this spring, we will have a doggie door and I think I'll see how it goes letting them come in and out on their own some. Then they'll have the bedroom and outside. We'll see - I just have to think about it - may have to crate the baby until she is big enough to play safely with the big girls without supervision - I guess it just depends on how they play together. I can puppy proof one room easily enough, I think, to where it will be safe. And my yard is totally dog proof. I have some decisions to make before spring . . .

They love their run & we know they will be perfectly safe & can't get into any trouble whilst we are out. The run is always padlocked as is the back gate. It has shelter from the weather & plenty of shade for when the weather is hot.

Currently Ally is crated during the day, but your picture is exactly what I'm considering at our new house, though with a wading pool inside the run and a heater/AC unit on either the doghouse or the shed (whichever we give her access to as you have done).

Buddy has the run of the house, with one bedroom shut off, cause it has all of Stacy's music equipment in it, cords and wires and stuff. But he has the kitchen, living room, and other bedroom, and he never messes up anything. I'm usually never gone for more than a few hours tops, so he just sleeps while I'm gone.:D (knock on wood:LOL: )

Sera's Mom

We have an enclosed back porch where Sera and Millie's crates are. In the summertime, I use a fan to cool them and they always have fresh, cool water available. In the winter, we have a heater we put on the porch to keep them warm. They have the run of our big back yard. We have a privacy fence, so no one can see them.

When my fiancee and I leave for work we put Brodix in the Kitchen with a baby gate. There is a side door off the kitchen (where we put in a doggy door) and he can go in and out. However, we only let him go the length of the house on the side yard (Dog Run).

The reason for this is because we just bought this fixer upper house and there is a half emtpy pool in the backyard along with an old creeky fence. Otherwise I would let him hang out in the kitchen (where he has food, water, BED, AND TONS OF TOYS...which all end up outside at the end of the day) and then go out an roam wherever in the side or back yard.

We just don't have the finances to fix the pool/fence right now. We are almost done with the interior so the exterior is next.

ANyways, to get to my point. When I put up the baby gate he starts whining like crazy. When I lock the front door I can hear him run to the side yard and zoom out the doggy door. So I am assuming he is happy. It's just the initial fact that we are leaving that he whines about. I FEEL SOOOO GUILTY leaving him all day while at work.
