The inguinal canal, that is the canal through which the testicles descends after birth, closes for good between 12-14 weeks. There are very few (rare) exceptions to that. After 12-14 weeks of age, testicles are where they will be.

Undescended testicles are 13.6 times more likely to become cancerous. Likewise, there is a much higher risk of testicular torsion, where the testicle twists and cuts off the blood supply. This is about as excruciatingly painful as it gets for a dog.

You should really begin considering having your dog neutered.

Yes he has been to a vet and they said to wait until 8 months which is now so i was just wondering if it by chance would drop.I am going to make an appointment monday. Thanks for the help.

My boy had testicular torsion at a year-he had an undescended testicle but my vet hesitated to neuter him as he has SAS. Ended up at Angell as an emergency and they did it there (They were great). He was so sick and in so much pain so you are right to get him to the vet and get it done. The neuter is straight forward at this point. The torsion is not someting you want him to go through... Good luck

Torsion isn't really "caused" by anything - except that the testicle is growing in the wrong place. It is supposed to sit in the scrotum. When it stays in the abdomen, then it's somewhere it shouldn't be and where there isn't a designated place for it. With room to move, they can twist on their "stalks" (for want of a better way of describing that) or they can grow in some really wierd places - up near the liver, for example. They can even end up wrapped around other organs (in which case, they can cut the blood supply to said organs).

It is better just to have any retained testicles removed. As already mentioned, cancer is the biggest risk when testicles are retained within the body instead of externally in the scrotum where they're meant to be.

So the obvious questions is....why? She doesn't think it will descend, but wants to wait another year before removing it? That logic doesn't make much sense, especially considering that the longer you wait, the greater the risk. There is no benefit to waiting.

It seems you are getting loads of dis-information???? I would not wait to get him neutered. Why wait to see if there will be a problem. If there is, you may not know it until it is an emergency.

As for him being soft for protection work, that is an old wives tale. I used to work and train with a person that made her living by training police/military/drug dogs. She would many times adopt dogs from local shelters and train them for personal protection work. The very first thing she did with every one of them, was to spay or neuter. One Shepherd that had been abandoned by the side of a road went on to take a First place in a local Police Dog Competition. So don't worry about his working ability.

That is garbage. My neutered 80 lb boxer would kick anybodies butt. He is one tuff dog. Personally the fact my dog has a better chance of living longer because he "IS" neutered is all I need to know. Plain and simple neuetering is better and it doesn't soften a dog. Plus I don't want to deal with an un neutered dogs bad habits and tendencies either.

I went thru the same thing with my Cisco. I waited until about 11 months old to make a decision on nuetering him. My vet advised me to do so for months and I finally agreed. The risks are too high and by the time of his operation he was already in pain from it. If yours hasn't dropped by now, it's probably not going to. Only you can decide what's best for your baby. Good luck. I know it's a hard decision for some.
