when to let my dog of his leash

Our dog Bruce is absouletly crackers and when ever your walking him he trys to chase the leaves when the wind is blowing I was just wandering when it would be okay to try him of the lead and how to go about it any tips

You train with the lead first. If he's distracted by the leaves the best thing you can do is keep him under control by keeping him on his leash. Do you have an enclosed area where you can practice some obedience commands with him (come, leave it, sit, down, stay, etc.)? The key is training. Make him understand what you want from him. Obedience classes are great too, the instructors can help you teach him what you are expecting him to do.

You need to train the dog extensively first. He should be as close to 100% at the following: Recall, walking with a loose leash by your side (with leash), a wait commant and make sure that he is as close to 100% with all of these commands WITH major distractions such as other dogs, people, etc. BEFORE ever letting your dog off leash. Why in the world would you risk your dog's life letting him chase leaves just because he wants to and has yet to be trained properly.

Tulsa-Dan has a good point. One major trait of boxers is that they get distracted VERY easily....even with extensive training. There's too much of a risk of them darting off to chase a squirrel or to see another dog or human across the field/park/yard/street....I'm proud to say that Porter listens to my commands about 90% of the time. Even outside off lead. There have been times when he's darted off and not heeded my call. Those times are scary and the thought that runs through my head is 'omg it's my fault if he gets hurt'. I could never live with that. Anyway that's my 2cents worth.
