When she sees other dogs...

When our new 1.5 year old female boxer sees other dogs and is on a leash she starts pulling like crazy to get over to the other dog.

She made a scene at the vet last week. She saw another dog and starting pulling to get over. I had to hold her back and then she started barking. I know, it was mostly my fault because I was pulling her back. But I try to restrain her because the other owner may be a little freaked out at how hard she is pulling to get over to their dog. Plus she drools and someone actually thought she was "foaming a tthe mouth".

I want to bring her to obedience training. How do I bring her to obedience training if there will be other dogs there? Do I just go and let he make a scene so the trainer can help? Did other people have this issue?

The amazing thing, she goes to the dog park and I never hear a peep out of her. She runs around. the only time I have any concern is when new dogs arrive. She stands at the gate and checks them out. Once or twice there was a little growl (wasnt sure which dog it came from) and then they are all set and carry on playing. That isn't a big deal correct?

TIA!

I wish I could offer some words of wisdom but I have the same problem with my Boxer. She loves all dogs and is quite rude about showing it. I get embaressed at how she acts and my inability to control her in these situations.

She never barks at other dogs she just wants to be in their face and on top of them. I am sure that many an owner has cursed me under their breath.

When I had Cami in puppy kindergarden she was a little easier to handle because of her size and she would use all of her energy to get at the other dogs in the first 30 minutes that the second half hour she would spend laying on the ground upside down and rolling around playing by herself too tired to continue trying to get at the other classmates.

In her second go round of a more advanced puppy class and her nearing 50 pounds it was impossible to control her and I would watch as all the other dog owners would vie for a location away from us! It was sad but they were paying good money to learn and my dog was just a total distraction to every dog in the class. I finally pulled her from the class hoping that time and lots of patience would help her to mature, but sadly..... the problem continues.

I hope that you have better luck than us.

Hi Kevin,
We had the same problem with Baron. We were embarrassed when we went to the vet because of the way he acted. We would see other puppies sitting nicely and then there was Baron, pulling on the leash, whining, barking, drooling....well, you get the picture :) We took Baron to obedience training and the first night he wanted to play with the other dogs. The trainer took him from us and gave him a good yank on his leash and told him NO. Baron sat right down and just looked at her! We repeated the process everytime he started to get to excited about other dogs and it has worked well! (Of course, we haven't been back to the vets office yet.....will be going soon for neutering, will let you know how things go) ;)

Kevin, please take your dog to class. Phone around and find an obedience instructor that will work with you. They may want you to take a couple of private lesson first so that you can get her under a little better control first.

Do you use a Gentle Leader? I would highly reccomend it, as getting control of the head is the first step. It doesn't sound like she is really aggressive. She just needs lots of training and in a class situation is where she needs to do it. :)

Good luck

harley is the same way!

when he plays with the other dogs here at home, he does that "boxer growl"..... thankfully, when playing with other dogs, he doesnt. he hasnt had a chance to play with another dog in about a month, so i dont know if hed still behave the same...

mostly, hes just persistant, stubborn, and strong. hes usually good about listening, but when theres something as exciting as another dog around, he doesnt come back when i call him. not even for food!!!!

he doesnt take a hint when the other dog growls.

poor guy, all he wants to do is play!!

Baron goes up on his back paws and starts to "box" the other dogs.
Needless to say the other dogs don't know what to do with him!

He just wants to play with them, but he needs to know that not every dog wants to play with him and that the initial behavior is unacceptable.

He has been doing very well lately. Now we just need to teach him not to jump on guests at our house

Do dogs learn to like the gentle leader?
They learn to love it :)

It all depends how you go about fitting it and getting them used to it. Time, patience and lots of treats do the trick. Just putting it on and dragging them around by the head it not a good option (sad, but this still actually happens  ).

What do you want your dog TO do when he sees another dog? That is what you need to train the dog to do. He's just excited and reacting naturally now. You need to show him what the appropriate behavior is when seeing another dog and work him (praise and reward that behavior) until the dog understands and automatically displays that behavior when in the presence of other dogs.

If your dog can sit, you're half way there.

Good luck.
