Someone who has a boxer told me that boxers were sooooo easy to housetrain. Their's only had 3 accidents in the house. My aunt's only had 2 accidents in the house. Mine has had 4 a day for 3 months. Tell me honestly, are house trained boxers just an urban legend?

He will be 5 months old in a week. We've had him since he
as 7 weeks old and have been working on house training ever since. He IS NOT house trained! Sure, we crate trained. He did marvelously. We praise him and give him treats when he goes outside. He loves it. He lets me know when he has to go outside - about 1 out of every 10 times, anyway. He knows going in the house is bad, he ducks his tail and puts himself in the crate. But HE STILL DOES IT. This morning, he went running to his crate, then realized he hadn't peed yet, so he stepped out of the crate and peed in the floor, then jumped back in! I am so sick of cleaning up all his messes. He knows what I mean when I ask if he has to go outside. He goes willingly - happily. He does 1 and 2, then comes in the house again and pees within 10 feet of the door! He sometimes even pees on his way to the door to go outside. And unlike any sane dog, Roman has to walk while he goes to the bathroom - both 1 and 2. So instead of a small puddle, he can hit 4 rooms with one shot (yes, he's done it before) I watch him like a hawk. It doesn't matter. He gives no signs of what he's about to do. He doesn't sniff around. He just goes. Anywhere. Everywhere. To add to our problems, because obviously we like cleaning up dog messes, we adopted a half grown boxerette who has had no training. Piece of cake. Roman pees in the house, how much worse could she be? But I think they're competing! Rayna peed on the bed earlier today. Luckily we have a bed where we can unzip the top off and wash it. So we did, and as I was putting the fresh clean straight out of the dryer sheet on the bed Roman jumps up and starts peeing! Right away! What's the deal? Someone told me one day it would just click. When will that be? Will it ever happen? Is he doing this on purpose or have I missed some important house training tactic? Are we just bad dog parents? I'm at my wits end. With the way I feel right now, Roman may never see the outside of his crate ever again. Rayna is just learning, but Roman has no excuse. What do I do? Someone please help!

Wow that must be VERY frustrating. First things first, have you had him checked out for a UTI? If not take him to the vet. Also is he neutered?

How does he let you know he needs to go out? Maybe you could try bell training. If he just goes #1 once outside, wait until he does it twice. Maybe run around a bit with him until he goes a few more times. Alot of the time they dont fully empty their bladders the first pee, so make sure he does :)

Someone else will pobably have an answer to the bed peeing thing, but it sounds to me as though both of them are vying for top dog (ie posession of the prized sleeping position). Maybe you need to take a look at how they see you. Do they actually see YOU as the alpha? Or are they above you in the family?

Do a search on dominance and house training and soo many threads will come up for you to look over :)

You're not alone

Sounds like the same experience I had with Rocky. He was fine w/the crate, but it just never clicked that he needed to go outside until he was almost 16 mos old. When it finally clicked, we still had some issues. He won't bark, so he would just stand in front of the door and stare at it and if we weren't in the room to see him, he would go right infront of the door. Now that he's 18 mos old, he's bell trained and does "hold" it for more than an hour! :) It will get better, just have patience.

Ah, the joys of potty training...I had problems training Cadence, but Colby has been a complete joy to potty train. I seriously think he's had a total of 10 accidents since we've had him. He's now 6 months old and if he pees in the house, it's b/c he's waited too long to let us know he has to go out. You may need to reinforce the whole going outside thing. Take Roman out every hour, on the hour. Then gradually move to every 2 hours, every 3, etc...This of course only works if you don't work. If you do, you're stuck with the crate. But even before you leave for work, keep taking him out. I used to take Colby out every 15 minutes after he ate. Now he goes out once or twice before going to work and then he's fine. Do the whole reward thing like you said: when he goes outside and actually goes potty, give him a treat. If he doesn't go, no treat. We did that with Colby and he got so ticked off that he didn't get a treat, that he'd go outside and go. Then he got his treat! It is very frustrating, but it will get better. Some dogs unfortunately just take longer than others.
Good luck!

we are going thru the same thing with chopper our 9 week old. he knows where the door is but he still insists on peeing inside:) it really is up to us to continue to bring them outside every 1/2 hour or so so that they start to learn where it is they need to go to go potty. keep trying they will get it soon enough. imagine me with whit carpet:eek: good luck to you.

Maxwell is doing pretty good with this. But, I really should say we are doing pretty good. I can honestly say that the accidents have been because we didn't pay attention to time and the signs he had to go. sniffing, walking around in a circle.... He is just a baby and will learn if we keep it up.

Have patience it will happen....

I am sorry to hear about your houstraining problems. With Samson, we kept wondering if we were doing something wrong. It just took him a long time to grasp the whole idea. We crate trained him while we were at work, and he usually did pretty well. But he would pee and walk often on the weekends. Just when I thought he had it, there would be another accident. He didn't seem to be fully housetrained until between a year and a year and a half.
We took him out frequently and gave lots of praise outside. If we caught him in the act, we promptly took him outside and had him finish there, followed by lots of praise. It does take a lot of time and patience!

Be Patient!

I think your pup needs a little more time, about nine months before you can really say they are house trained. Hanley

I got my Sullivan as a 9 month old boy from the local SPCA and he had not been house trained at all! His previous owner was about 82 or something and couldn't handle him or training him, so he just let him run around the house and use it as his personal toilet. We crate trained Sully and he knew not to potty in his crate (his house we call it), he would jump up on our bed WITH US IN IT! and pee looking at us. We didn't let him on the bed either, it was just like he was saying "although I am not allowed up here.. this bed is mine"! I started taking him outside every 1/2 hour, no pee or poo no treat (dehydrated liver, the best training tool I have found), then every hour same deal, then every 2 hours. We also have a dog door he knows how to use it he just felt it was easier to pee where he wanted. He still pee's in our basement if he is unsupervised (we have a full bathroom down there and if I am having a bath and he doesnt come in to lick my shoulders he will more than likely pee on the floor) but he learned very quickly once he realized that he got praise and treats when he did that. Whenever he did anything inside I would try to get him outside and all the while trying to hussle him out I would say "Outside, Outside!". I would get up every morning at 5:30 and physically walk him into our backyard and tell him to go pee, and if he did I would praise him so much "Oh Sully! Good Boy! what a smart boy!" you have to make them feel like "wow I did something really special and this is great!" they will want to do it again and again. Sounds like you need to go back to square one and start taking them out every hour, and after every meal, or nap, drink, etc. Praise praise praise, treat treat treat! make them feel so amazing they WANT to go outside.

I also (once I knew Sully knew to go outside) would make him sit and stay and watch me clean up the mess. Then take him outside with me with the bag of #2 and I would put it in the yard in his poo spot and say "Outside", he would walk over and sniff it and look at me like "Oh yeah, outside. Right. Got it!"

Best of luck with your training!
Remember dehydrated liver is the cadillac of dog treats, give 'em a try, bet they will both do anything for them!

Thanks for all the advice. My patience with Roman was renewed after he finally let me sleep that night. :) I'm going to get a bell today and we're going to work on bell training. Maybe that will do the trick. He doesn't have a UTI, but I think he's still struggling with bladder control - at least, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. I've also upped the praise and treats he gets when he goes outside.

My hope was restored when I realized Rayna is catching on quick. Three days without an accident!

Wish me luck!
