Abby is 6 mo's. She barks and has for a while but only when playing with us or just playing. She just seems to be such a wimp about stuff. Loud noises, people coming to the door, going outside at night, etc. When she is at my parents who have a boxer, there dog will bark at the door and Abby will run to her crate. I have heard this is normal but when do they out grow it?

She is not a wimp; she is simply a baby. She has alot of growing and learning to do

Hey Mum,

Abby isn't a wimp. She's just being Abby.

I've had 5 boxers and all were different.

One was Sadie. Sadie was more careful than our others boxers. She used to get nervous when the indoor ceiling fans came on. She'd look at the fan - then glance back at us - then back to the fan. We'd re-assure her it was OK.

Loud noises bothered her more than our other boxers. She made up for it by being the sweetest one of the bunch though. She grew out of most of her timidness into a beautiful show dog and mother.

Maybe with Abby, try a lot of re-assuring, stroking and soft talk. I'm sure eventually she'll grow into a more confident boxer. Just don't rush her or compare her too much to other boxers. She is who she is.

What your little girl is lacking is self-confidence, we have a 3-year-old Doberman and she’s still scared of garbage cans, rocks, etc... What I’ve been doing is letting her smell the objects that she seems to be afraid off and the next time she walks by them she doesn’t even flitch.
Take baby steps with her, don’t push her to learn new sounds and objects, with time and patience’s she’ll be great.
Good luck!

I've only had Bronx for 13 days. He's eight months old. On his
second day here he started barking at car doors and odd noises.
He's got such a deep bark, I really do feel safer, though he
wouldn't hurt a fly. He's a big baby.

Aww...Abby's just being a puppy! She has alot to learn yet and know what to trust and what not to. As for loud noises, I don't think too many Boxer's in general are fond of loud noises or sudden strange movements...as a matter of fact...neither am I!;)

Layla is 9.5 years old and still a whimp (with loud noises) :) She is much braver than she used to be, but in a crisis she would be found hiding behind us.

We love her dearly lovicon

When Max was younger (he's now almost 2) I was told if he gets scared of something don't make a big deal of it. Offer comfort but if you go over board dogs actually get more scared because they see your reaction as fear aswell. This may be total garbage but Max is pretty brave...he continues to sleep with any sound:D Denise

Clarification

I think I was misunderstood. I realize that puppy's will be puppy's. She is just a baby, if she were a wild dog she would still be with her furmom. I just was wondering when they tend to outgrow it. she already has started to.

She also is a very well socialized puppy. She has gone on many car trips, visits family and friends, has gone to pet stores, horse shows, the barn, plays with dogs of all sizes, etc, etc. She has taken that all in stride.

I just was wondering when they tend to outgrow it.
