When do males start hiking their leg?

I'm still trying to decipher how old my Conner is. The rescue said 7 months, but his foster mom and I both think he's younger. HOWEVER, I just noticed that he does hike his leg sometimes (for example, when he just peed on my step stool!!!). Would this be any indication of his age or does it vary too much to determine?

We're seeing the vet for his opinion tomorrow.

Thanks!

Mmm - it totally varies. My guy started around 4 months (!), but I think most are closer to 8-10 months and often quite a lot older. And of course, some males just never bother.

There are several previous threads you could look up to get a general idea from people's responses.

Hiking!

Levi did not start hiking his leg until he hit about 14 months, but he was also neutered and all of his playmates are girls. he still doesnt do it very much, and he is 18mos now.

My Joe is 6 years old and doesn't lift his leg. He will when friends bring their male dogs in the yard and they are marking, but he doesn't any other time. I do not think that there is a way to determine age by whether or not they lift.

Your vet should know best.

Well, the verdict is in! Conner is 8-9 months old according to my vet, which was about what the other vet who did his neuter thought.

SO, Conner started lifting his leg at 8-9 months, but he doesn't do it all the time.

When he doesn't hike, Conner seems to be trying to draw pictures with his pee-pee. It's something out of a Jackson Pollock painting. I think the kid has talent!

Oscar still pees like a girl. He'll be 2 in August and has never shown the faintest indication of lifting a leg. Silly boy. I guess he's just lazy.

Snoop is 20 months old, and he stands or cocks his leg, guess it's just up to his mood, I don't know.
The funny thing is that he's just starting to scuff his feet, bringing up grass divots, when he finishes doing his poo-poo's!
He just looks so happy when he's done the feet scuff thing! :)

i think it also depends on if there potty area has things standing vertical, thats normally what the hike up on. I read if you take them out in open areas your less likely to have hiking problems in the house.

Laughing so hard I can't breathe!

What a funny topic! I guess I never thought about dogs hiking or not...My Rex never hiked but he spent the first year of his life in leg casts because of his knees, so we just figured that was it. He's 6 this year and has never lifted or marked his territory.

In fact, when we moved cross-country, we really worried about him, he wouldn't poo for 4 days, and only piddled when he couldn't take it any more. We were relieved when we got into our new house and the first thing he did was take a big doo-doo in the yard, and we knew we were home!

When we go for walks or to the park, he never goes any kind of potty. Dixie piddles every two steps, we have role reversal going on!

Boy, dogs are so funny. Who needs cable???

Well, Krose goes near a bush, comes to a halt and very suddenly lifts his leg very very high I sometimes feel like he's going to fall:D and pees.

Everytime, he does it like a ritual. Very rough movements and very high
