I'm no trainer, but I guess I can speak of my experience...After a few weekends-a-month of some test runs I used to leave Blue home alone when she was only 7 months and she would just take it as down time and sleep mostly. I would walk her at 8am, noon or 1pm, and evening, it worked out great! BUT if I didn't come home exactly at 5:30pm (traffic in N. VA is so unpredictable) she would tear up all my old college textbooks. So now that I've gotten better furniture, she's crated everyday and I think its alot less stressful for both of us.

We did the same as you, and got the same outcome! We werent able to leave our boxer alone to roam the entire house, until he was about 2yrs old. We went from crating, to gating him in the kitchen w/ his water bowl and big, poofy dog bed. That worked great for a good 1/2yr. We still had a couple "incident's" after we let him roam.........but I think that's to be expected. GOOD LUCK!

I still can't leave Buster around the whole house alone when I am not there. I leave him in the basement where he is comfortable with toys and bed, food and water. Also, there are only overhead lights in the basement. When I left him in other rooms, he chewed/ate the cords to my lamps and I was scared to death he would hurt himself and burn down the house!
