Pearl and I were out today enjoying the fabulous weather and walking through the neighborhood. I was walking by a house and a car drove up and a guy got out with two dogs, no leash on either. He thought they would follow him up to the house but as soon as they saw Pearl they took off toward us. I just stood there, I knew running off would make it worse but I'm not sure what to do really. I know Pearl would not be aggressive but you never know when a strange dog comes barreling up, growling with hackles, much less two. The guy was yelling his fool head off but wasn't exactly in a hurry to get over to his dogs. I just stood there with his dogs circling and making Pearl very nervous. They finally left and I continued on our walk giving Pearl reassurance but not making a big deal out of it. So what do you do in this situation?

Exactly what you did. But I probably would have been SCREAMING at the owner!
Zoey on the other hand would have been like....YIPPEEE time to play!
I don't understand some dog owners! They need to understand that even though they might think their dogs are friendly, strangers don't have a clue and something like that which happened to you could give someone a heart attack!!
I am glad you and Pearl are OK. :)

Yup! I agree, you did the best you could! :) I would also get that jerks address and report him to the proper authorities..... I know the feeling though, you almost feel like your personal space is being violated and I am sure Pearl felt the same way!

That happened once when I was walking my last boxer Teysha (7 -95 to 10-05). A pit bull got loose from a yard across the street. He spotted me and Teysha across the street and made a mad dash for us. I'm in a stance to give this dog the boot and as the pit got within striking distance Teysha got up on her back legs and literally gave this dog a side swipe with her paw and sent this dog sideways. Problem solved thank god !

Well done for staying calm, similar things have happened here, particually when walking past a house and a dog has come flying out the front door towards us. It is scary, glad you are both fine :)

Thank you to everybody for your responses. I was hoping this was one of those situations where less is more and standing still would be best. I also didn't say anything to the man but I was sure to give him a look like the heat of ten thousand white hot suns or something equally as scathing. ;)

I hate when people feel there dogs are beyond a leash. I have always been scared of big dogs I do not know so I would probably poop my pants with two running at me. There is a guy up the block who lets his dog rome around his front yard off the leash, MY DH encountered the dog while bringing Dutchess for a walk and said the dog is a nice size but harmless, Now I am afraid to walk Dutchess past that house big chicken that I am.
