I've been collecting egg shells intending to add them to my veggies mush, but I tried putting it in the food processor tonight and it didn't break it down real well. It comes out as little sharp 1 centimeter pieces. I was hoping to grind it down further. What do you guys do with them?

When I make veggi mush I throw in the entire egg. Actually I usually put in about three. My blender usually grinds the fresh shells up to about 1mm sizes. If you are putting in dry shells do you think maybe they are not breaking up because they are so dried out? Just a thought.

Also, I think you will have better success if you grind them up in the mush itself. The weight of the veggis/liquid will aid in their grinding I think.

I bake my shells in the oven at 300 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Then I put them in my small food processor and grind them up dry into very, very tiny pieces. Most of the time it turns out like dust. I don't feed raw bones, just the raw meat, so I use mine as a calcium supplement. 3/4 teas. to 1 teaspoon per one pound of raw meat is supposed to balance out the calcium/phosphorus ratio for those of us that don't feed raw bones. I put my whole eggs and shells in the food processor when I am making the veggie mush.

If you have just the shells, what about using a coffee bean grinder - I have not tried this personally, but I have an electric one and it looks like it would do a great job! I would make sure that it is free of any coffee - can you imagine a Boxer on caffine :)

Thanks for the responses, I never thought of putting whole eggs in a food processor... very intersting. I use the eggs with the ground beef meal to make it a bit more wetter...

I think my food processor is too big, once a big piece of egg shell splatters on the edge, it won't slide back down to the blade. I'll have to try the coffee grinder ... only problem is we don' t even own a coffee maker. Oh well.

I throw 4-5 eggs in my food processor and chop them all up when I make my mush. I dump it in the mush bowl but all the bits of shells won't come out of the processor (like you said, they get stuck). So I leave the shells in the processor and then thow in lettuce. Now the shells bits will get smaller and attach to the lettuce. When I dump it in the bowl the lettuce helps remove the shells. Does that make sense? LOL

Dixie won't eat the egg shells unless they are very fine. Since we moved from processing in the food processor to processing in the juicer. Since eggs can't go through the juicer we had to find a new way to get the egg shells in it where Dixie would still eat.

What I do is add 1 dozen whole eggs to a month supply of mush. To get the egg shell VERY fine, I crack two or three whole eggs into the blender, and turn it on. as it starts processing the egg shells, I just drop whole eggs in one by one through the hole in the top of the blender lid. VOILA!

I never feed eggs, let alone egg shells. Should I reconsider and start adding eggs to Lacy's meals? Why do you add the shells? Don't they get enough calcium from the bones?

I personally feed RMB already, but I save the egg shells because I don't want to waste anything if it is good for them.

Yes, eggs are very good for dogs. But in moderation of course...mine get about 3-4 a week.

I feed whole RMBs and ground raw mixes. I guess I should check the label of the mixes and see if eggs are added. I never really think about adding eggs to Lacy's meals. Sometimes I will give her scrambled eggs if she needs a late-night snack, but I know it has been many months since she has had an egg.
