I hate Skunks !!

Our previous boxer got sprayed several times, we tried tomato juice and it did not work. Skunk Off which you can get at Petco kind of works, but a few times we took him to the groomer who did a great job of cleaning it up. But the smell still lingered for a few days especially if he got damp. On one ocassion I had to leave work and go home and change and shower again because I smelled also from trying to clean him up. My co-workers loved me:p

I think trapping it with the aid of animal control (they will even furnish the trap in most cases) would be a more humane way to handle that situation. I hope Hurricane doesn't get curious enough for you to have to find out about how to remove the scent from doggie fur!!

Oh, I forgot to mention, The first time Boxxy got sprayed, I tried the tomato juice thing, didn't work very well, but seeing as how he is white, he was stained red for a while, actually it was pink, how much did it suck to walk my pink dog around, I fealt like Marlene Copoland or something

Cruel? Yes. Dangerous? Extremely. Illegal? Probably.

I've heard that using Massengill douche (don't use vinegar and water scent) will remove the odor - put it on, rub it in and leave it for 10 minutes. I haven't tried this myself, but my neighbor gave it a glowing recommendation.
We have skunks all over our area, we try to block all the places under the gates and fences because they can squeeze in the smallest area. They can even burrow and live under your house as they have done many times with us. I wouldn't even go near a skunk and try to kill it myself. Get a trap from either your city animal control or a private exterminator and have them remove it. Also, there may be wildlife laws to consider as well. Skunks can carry rabies so be sure that your dog is current on its vaccinations. If you see a skunk out during the daytime hours, for sure that is not normal - it is most likely sick and you need to call animal control immediately. (That doesn't mean the ones out at night are healthy, they can be carriers not yet manifesting disease.) Good luck. I understand your situation completely! :) Stay away from those critters!

I kid you not! When I worked at the vet clinic 4 years ago, we used Masingil Feminine Douche to rid the dogs of the Skunk smell.

Found this receipe on Boxer Rescue:

Skunk Dip:

1/8 cup Dawn dish soap
2 cups Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda

Measurements do not have to be exact.

Bathe boxer with some plain dawn dish detergent, rinse. Wash again with soap/peroxide mix. Wait 3-5 minutes. Rinse. If smell is still prominent, repeat. Remember that dogs stink when they are wet anyway, so if it's not really strong, you don't have to repeat. Do not make soap mixture beforehand and store, as it would bubble up and create and chemical reaction that is pretty messy. Good luck!
