What to do if can not get home at lunch

Help,

I used to have a lenient job where I could go home at lunch, but got relocated to a new location where it is possible. My puppy is being crate trained. I can not stand the pee and poop eveywhere. Is it okay to leave him in the crate for nine hours? I don't want to give him away! The director at petco said it was fine and she leaves her great dane in there for 10 hours.

Well, is there anyone who could let "him" (can we have a name for your boy?) out in the middle of the day? A friend or neighbor or even a pet sitting service? I think that is still pretty young. If there is nothing you can do to get him out in the middle of the day, you will probably have messes to clean up for awhile. I think if he gets plenty of exercise BEFORE and AFTER he is in the crate he would adapt in time. It is always a hard deal to switch jobs, and you have to do what is best for you. Ideally, he could be let out in the middle of the day, but I think that our guys adapt to situations.

Well, he can and has held his pee for 8 hours in crate

I have had to leave him there a couple of times. He does not make a mess, the thing is I just feel so bad. If I know it is not mean, than i will feel better. I am not worried about the mess in the crate, which none so far, just the guilt.

Someone once told me that they pick up on the guilt and that makes it worse. I read an article though that put it all in perspective. Basically your dog will sleep most of the day. Their natural peak activity times are in the morning and evening, so if you give your puppy a good morning walk and another in the evening and some good quality play time, then he should be fine. As for the rest of the day, you are leaving him in a nice warm, safe crate with his toys and snacks - he has a pretty good life! So while it is not ideal, I think you shouldn't worry!

I wouldn't feel guilty. Do you crate him at night? Although Cassius is not in his crate for more than 5 hours W/O a break, we do let him sleep in bed with us. He has had to go into the crate for "reinforcement" that the proper potty place is OUTSIDE (BTW he is 7 months) It eases my guilt pangs some.. And knowing that he gets TONS of exercise also helps. We boxer owners tend to spoil anyways, I am sure your guys life is awesome. It is also reassuring to me that when I go get his kong and fill it up with yummies, he RUNS to his crate and never gives me grief about going in, he knows the deal, and he also knows that he gets a long walk or a trip to the dog park before he eats dinner!! You will be fine! just be ready for a wound up boy when you get home every day!! I KNOW there are many people who crate all day here, hopefully some of them will chime in.

Besides, what are the alternatives? Crating him is for your, and his own safety!!

It is OK to crate him for extended periods of time. But, understand that he will keep on pottying in his crate because his bladder is not developed and he can only physically hold it for about 4 hours at a time. I have an 8 month old and a 12 month old that I let out during lunch until the little guy was 6 months old, then I moved and now have to crate them for a full 10 hours a day. They do just fine now. All you can do is put a potty pad in his crate and hope that he uses that - or get someone to come over to let him out.
