what to do for diarrhea...?

I have a 4 month old pup who's been having some diarrhea issues on and off this past week. She even went in her crate Monday night and Friday night, which is really unusual for her. After Monday, I didn't think too much of it, because her stools seemed to be firming up, but they've been super runny all day today. Her energy levels seem normal, and she's eating and drinking just fine. I'm not sure how worried I need to be. She has a vet appointment for her rabies shot on Wednesday...is this something that could wait until then? Any suggestions on how to firm the stools up?

If it is not projectile, watery, then you probably could wait, and until then, you could add some canned pumpkin (not pie filling), pepto bismol, kaopectate, lessen the amount of water intake, use pedialyte (for children) non flavored, or some people use immodium, I like to use the other choices.

good luck...

Oh, it could also just be from her teething, many pups at this age get diarreha from teething...

I would not ever lessen their water intake, he needs the water to stay hydrated. Diarrhea can dehydrate a pup in a very short while.

You really need to keep the dog from gulping water, as that can perpetrate the symptoms, Ice is a good way to get hydration without gulping, and again, the pedialyte given moderately will help as well.

Of course we are assuming this dog is NOT dehydrated at this point...

My puppy suffered with diarhhea problems for a long time, but a trip to the vet and a prescription for R/D from Science Diet solved everything in a matter of days. If it doesn't improve, I'd visit the vet.

principessa,
You took the words right out of my mouth!! I just logged on to post the EXACT same problem with my 4mos old Daisy. No other symptoms but supper-soft stool. Never explosive, and not often water-like, just mush.

She has been on the same food for the last month I've had her, and up until last week her poops have been perfect!

Can I ask everyone how long they think I should let this go on before I try switching food? Or is that even likely the problem.

And on another note, she seems to be hungary all the time. She wakes me up at 6am every morning, not to pee, but because she wants to eat. She gulps down every meal (three a day). I have already upped the amount of food I give her based on what the bag says, by 1/2 a cup. Sorry if I should be posting this part in the feeding section, but I'm curious to know if these two things could be related.

Diarrhea tends to be a result of over feeding. How much do you feed and what?

ORIJEN PUPPY LARGE BREED (which after doing some research on the boards recently, I realize is probably not the best choice)

Oh my gosh!

I just went to their website to double check the reccomended feeding amounts, and I just realized I have still been feeding her the 1.5mos - 3mos dose!! I feel so stupid, and like such a horrible and negligent mum! No wonder she seems to be starving all the time!

Unfortunately, that doesn't explain the diarrhea. Plus, if I haven't been feeding her "enough" for the past couple of weeks, wouldn't she poop less over all? I'm telling you, this girl (before the diarrhea started), was having a good 4-5 healthy poops a day. Does that sound like a normal amout of daily BMs?

Sorry everyone, this is not how I wanted to make a first impression with my first post :(

Well, I have seen some of her "big girl" teeth coming in...

The vet told me to put her on a bland diet (boiled chicken & rice), gave me a prescription for Metronidazole, and is having me bring in a stool sample this Wednesday (we already had an existing appointment). I've also been giving her a spoon full of plain canned pumpkin 2-3 times daily. So far the stools are still very pudding-like, but she's been LOVING the chicken and rice at meal times, and goes nuts for the pumpkin. Hopefully her stomach will be normal soon!
