What size crate do I need?

My new puppy was just born today so I still have at least 8 weeks to get things ready but I'm so excited I'm thinking way ahead

I have a boston terrier and a crate that's big enough for her (although she doesn't use it anymore) and wanted to go ahead a get a larger crate so that the new puppy can grow into it. I know I'm going to get one with a divider but I'm not sure what size the crate should be for when he gets bigger and no longer needs the divider.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

Hi there, congratulations on your impending puppy parenthood!

I have bought two crates recently for my boy, they're 'Petbrand' collapsible cages. I was savvy with my interweb shopping and got them both for about half the price of retail. The one Bruce is in at present is a size 3, for dogs up to 11kg. The 'later on' crate is a size 5, for dogs up to 32kg. It may seem a bit of overkill on my part to have two, but I'm really happy with the arrangement. The large crate didn't come with a divider and looked utterly cavernous compared to the one he's in right now. The smaller crate is easier to lug around, can be set up on the back seat of my car and in other people's homes easily, and it fits nicely into the central hub of my house, which is where I want him to be at present. I dare say Bruce will have outgrown that size 3 crate in a few months (he's 9 weeks at the moment) but that ought to get us through the settling in and toilet training period nicely.

Hopefully your boston terrier sized crate will suffice nicely as a puppy crate? The size 5 crate I have looks HUGE but that's because Bruce is so wee at present, almost hard to believe he'll be big enough to occupy that space - but the vet has warned me he undoubtedly will, and then perhaps some! :o)

The size of crate you would need for an adult boxer is minimum 42" (106 cm). That's if you want the dog to be able to stand or sit up without bashing his head, anyway

So if you want a crate usable when she's an adult, that would be the minimum to buy. And if you can accomodate a larger crate without too much problem, I'd buy larger. A little room to move for an adult dog is rather nice, especially if the dog is crated frequently.

No..he won't be crated frequently. Maybe a little more on the weekends (church etc) but I'm home all day with kids and most anywhere I go, I take my dog with me if it doesn't involve getting out of the car for longer than 5 minutes.

I appreciate the help and I'll be looking for the sized crate mentioned.

We got a smaller crate for training but now that my boy is nearly 5 months old he has completely out grown it. We got him a new one over the weekend. I was going to go 42" but I remembered that the breeder nick-named him Frank the Tank because he was the biggest of the litter. So I called the breeder to ask how big the father is...75lbs. So we got the 48" crate instead. =D

Izzy is 10 weeks ,she loves her crate now that I put a divider wall in.Before the wall she would use the one end for the bathroom.Now i can move the wall as she grows.All it takes is some hard cardboard and some ties.
