My baby Max is 2 1/2 years and he has the run of the house
when I work 2 days a week. We did the trial and error of going
out for short periods and then longer. The key thing I found out
was before you leave the house stop and take a look around at
anything left out for his pleasure (bag of buns on counter, shoes,
candles, remotes etc.) Once you get through your mind that
you have to do a house cleaning before going out you will get
far better results. I don't even leave dishes on the counter anymore. Now I am thinking of vidio taping him one day because
he seems awfully tired when I get home but I haven't lately
been missing anything. I guess maybe he just terrorizes my poor
LB (my cat).

Completely Boxer Crazy
i had never thought about putting them in one of the xtra rooms while we were gone - they sleep with us in our room, they have a big, thick doggy bed in there, so we could leave them in there -IF i could get my husband to actuallt put his dirty clothes in the dirty clothes hamper :)

Xena was always crated at first when we were not going to be home for longer than an hour. As she grew, we "weaned" her from her crate to be on her own. A few mishaps, nothing too serious...except it was almost the end of DH's world when she ate his bd chicken off the counter, but it was a live and learn type deal. To this day, the only thing that will tick Xena off when left alone is not having a window to look out of!:p She will sit in the window and just wait there until we come home! If the blinds are down...the blinds are toast! It is habit now even for the kids to leave the blinds up when no one is home! I believe it is the window that keeps her out of trouble.
Crating is the best most safest way to go if you know your fur-kid tends to get into trouble. Less stressful for you and less stressful for your babies! They are very much like toddlers!
Good Luck to you and I hope your DH will eventually forgive them for just being who they are...mischevious lil darlings!;)

Just a word of caution. I left Max in the sunroom with a brand
new bed that he loved. I came home and it was in 10,000 pieces.
I guess he was mad at me!

We stopped using the crate when nestle was about 9 months (5 months ago) and keep her in the kitchen with a gate. We have to Nestle-proof the kitchen when we leave. She has chewed up the bills, taken gallon bottles of water out to the yard through her doggie door and basically gets her little paws on anything she can reach. We tied the cabinets (child proof) and keep all papers etc. out of reach which helps to keep the kitchen very neat and clean and she is just fine. We put lots of toys in the kitchen and a mushy fleece blanket.

we originally put her bed in there. not a good idea. she chewed up both of them.
it was on rainy days and she must have gotten bored inside and began playing and well, i came home to a kitchen filled with stuffing.

after the few kinks, this works great for her. she has a doggie door and gets to run around in the yard and we don't worry if we work late that she is cramped in the crate.

good luck.
PS: remember that anything hanging low on the fridge is "fair game." keep the magnets up high.
