I tried to leave mine uncrated and when i returned he had destroyed the house..... put a 2 foot hole through a door, ate my cell phone, ate my corless phone. ripped up books, pottied everywhere. Just unbelievable was the destruction. So I had the idea to just block off one room. So I left him for about an hour to see how it would go and when I got back he had ripped up half of the linolium on the floor and ate park of the wall. So he is now crated at all times when I'm not there. He's fine if he's at the babysitter's house because they have other dogs to keep him company. So I think the only way I would uncrate him would be if I got him a companion. Oh my precious tornado!

I'm still wary of leaving Sammi out on her own. She's just capable of anything, and probably wouldn't let my older dog be. My suggestion, though, would be to baby-proof the house. Even with us home when she's out (which is always, she's only crated when I go out), there is nothing at her level that she shouldn't have, and we had to go get the little wastepaper baskets that you have to step on to open because that was a favorite dig of her (I don't understand the love of tissues???). A baby gate to confine her to one part of the house that has nothing available to destroy is a great idea too.
Good luck.

Do you have an extra bedroom in your house that you can give to your dogs? I have a two bedroom house and at this time I sleep in one and the dogs get their own room where their kennels are. I also put a futon in there and layed it flat, so they just get put in their room at night and when we aren't around and they can either lay on the futon or in their kennels. It works good. Though, someday I'll have a baby and that wil be it's room.

Okay, I will try to keep this to the point but I kind of need to give you a background story too... It's funny...now!!

Zoe used a crate for house training purposes only so when we were home she was not confined to the crate unless we were gone (big mistake I have now learned, I promise to do better by our next boxer baby). Anyway Zoe was reliable alone outside of her crate without any accidents or other bad behavior for about 4 hours (the time between me leaving for work & my husband coming home) by the time she was about 4.5-5 months. Zoe never chewed on anything that wasn't hers. Zoe was almost 7 months old when we adopted Gus (English Cocker about 3-4 years old) from our local humane society. Gus stayed in the kennel the first night without any accidents & then the next nights we allowed him in bed with us (sat & sun night). Gus was left in the kennel for the 4 hours they were alone for the first week. After that they both had free roam of the house. Gus was apparently house broke (he was a stray so we had no info to go from when we adopted him) and we had absoblutely no incidents. Life was great!

About 4 weeks after we adopted Gus we went on a trip, total of 2 days, flying & all. They stayed with some friends the first 2 nights and were dropped off at home about 6 hours before we returned. The ottoman was moved??

For about the next month we would come home to our ottoman & our 2 person chair moved. I came home for lunch one day & found the ottoman blocking the hallway, approx 15'. Needless to say our "Angel" who never did ANYTHING distructive had now helped the newbie to move furniature! They moved & chewed (lost 1 ottoman, have a giant hole in the side of the chair & a small patch of mauled upholstry on the couch) due to leaving them alone a little longer than normal even after we thought they were "well adjusted"...thankfully this has all ceased now and they again have free roam of the house, but we did have to crate Gus for a few months if we were going to be gone for any lenghth of time (over 30min) and Always made sure all objects we didn't want destroyed were completely out of Boxer Reach!

I hope you get a laugh from this story (I do now) and that everything works out for you, it did for us & Zoe was still young, I like the suggestion of giving them their own bedroom...more space but still somewhat confined. I have a friend who does this with her 2 Rotties & it seems to work well for them! Good luck!

Ha Ha Our youngest pup 9wks pee'd on the floor last night, and after I scolded her, she had the nerve to run off with the pee soaked paper towel!!! Gotta love the little hard heads

Please found a positive trainer around you! A 9 weeks old puppy will pee many and many times on the floor before she learn to hold and where is the good place to go, and she won't learn it by scolding her!:( It's like punishing a one year old kid who don't have a diaper for the first time and pee in his pants! Ignore peeing at the wrong place, clean the mess when she's not there (so she won't understand it a good way to get your attention, as she maybe already understood with you running after her and the pee soaked paper towel) and give a lot of praise and cookies when she does it where you want to.

Good luck!

Well, my Leonard would never stay in a kennel. He had separation anxiety and I guess didn't like to be confined. At first he would move the kennel all around the room with him inside it. We even tried four sandbags on top of it and he could still move it. So, when my hubby and I would come home, we would try to guess where the kennel was, and then, one day, we came into the house and found "Houdini", the kennel escape artist!!! No matter what type of kennel we bought, he would find a way to break out of it! So, we did end up letting him stay out and he tore up an entire phone book, got into the trash, pottied on the floor, just bored, I guess!!! So, we decided to do the baby gate thing to keep him away from carpeted areas of the house. That way, if he made a mess, it was easier to clean up. He is a few years older now and has calmed down and only chews on something if he hears fireworks or loud noises. He never has liked the taste of remote controls, luckily!!! He still likes to get into the trash, so I just put that where he can't get to it.

Layla is another story!!! She is almost two years old, but all puppy!!! One night while we were sleeping she found a wooden cat ornament and turned it into mulch! I was sad, as it was a gift, but I realized it is only a "thing". She still sleeps with us at night, but when we go to work, she goes into her kennel. She actually loves it in there for some reason! Although we got her a pad to make it more comfortable and it is almost completely chewed up!!! I should have stuck with old towels. She has every toy in the world, but would rather have something she is not supposed to have!!! Those funny boxers!

Anyway, the other thing I do to help Leonard when we are away is to leave one of my husbands socks in the room. For some reason, that makes him more comfortable.

Well, good luck all!
Cheryl :)

IDEA.........

Well Bella has never been crated, but when left she is in the room (where I put everything out of reach and leave the TV on for her) and in the hall with all other doors shut and out of reach. This certainly seems to work as she has access to her bed, our bed, a few toys, her water and company via the TV. We find this works VERY well and Bella has been left in this environment for up to 3 hours at a time!

I think this is better has she has room, comfort and of course her water. She sleeps most of the time then and when we get in, she great us with "wobbly legs"! lol.
