Since switching from Canidae, I'm having a hard time finding treats with ingredients I am happy with. I really like the Eagle pack holistic select, but they're so expensive($7 for a tiny bag). i will continue to use them, but not solely. What treats do everyone else feed?

I feed EVO treats. Same ingredients as the food minus a couple of things I can remember off the top of my head. The only thing I don't like about them is they are very small, but are great when training.

You could use alot of things for treats. Tyson likes all this stuff:
apples, bananas, strawberries, liver treats, wellness treats, jerky treats, small pieces peanut butter bread. Pretty much anything. I am now making him freeze dried liver treats. I just got the liver today, boiled it, cut into pieces, lay on cookie sheet until frozen, then put in an uncovered container in freezer for about a month. Hope it works well. If it does, I may try doing it with chicken next.

Some others will be offering some ideas too.

I make my own, takes me about 5 minutes to make the dough and then I put them on a cookie sheet like drop cookies and bake at a low temp for 30 minutes or so. Very easy, no huge messes (just a bowl and measuring cup) and I know exactly what is in them. Costs me around $5 for approximately 100 good sized round treats, and that was with using gluten free flour so if you used regular flour that could probably be cut down to $2 or so.

I also have a bag of Natural Balance limited ingredient diet treats for training purposes since they're tiny (they make big ones too though).

You can also do your own, you can do your own beef jerky either in the oven or food dehydrator, boiled chicken pieces, green beans, air popped popcorn, etc.

I use baby food. Either Sweet Potato, carrot, or green bean but you could also use meat baby foods or peanut butter. Just that, water, and flour. Very simple and very basic.

Here's some recipes. On the baby food ones you can substitute any one you choose. The recipe says to roll out and to cookie cut, etc yeah i don't have that kind of time so I do them like chocolate chip cookies and just spoon them onto a cookie sheet. If you want them soft like cookies leave them that way if you want them hard like dog biscuits then spread them out with your finger so they're thin.

Peanut butter dog cookies

add half a cup of peanut butter to a mixing bowl
Use a whisk to whip the peanut butter and make it light and creamy.
Add a half cup milk and whisk into the peanut butter.
Add 1 1/2 cups water.
The mix should be a similar color to cafe au lait.
Add enough flour to make a soft dough (pliable enough to roll out but not too stiff).
Cut shapes out with cookie cutter.
Put in warm oven and bake at 300 degrees for half an hour.
Turn oven down to 200 degrees and bake an additional half an hour.
Turn off oven and leave in warm oven to turn crispy.

Pumpkin cookies

1/2 cup canned 100% pure pumpkin (not pie filling).
1 1/2 cups water
Flour

Mix the pumpkin with the water.
If the mixture is a bit thick add more water.
Add enough flour to make a soft dough (pliable enough to roll out but not too stiff).
Cut shapes out with cookie cutter.
Put in warm oven and take at 300 degrees for half an hour.
Turn oven down to 200 degrees and bake an additional half an hour.
Turn off oven and leave in warm oven to turn crispy or take out if you want them chewy.

Carrot cookies

Take 1 jar pureed carrot baby food and empty into a mixing bowl.
Fill the jar up 4 times with water and add to mixing bowl.

Try Tuna Fudge. They are cheap and easy to make, smelly and dogs love them.

TUNA FUDGE -- good agility /obedience treat, soft, smelly

2 - 6 oz. cans tuna OR 1 - 14 oz. can salmon (do not drain either)
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp garlic powder or granulated garlic
2 eggs -- lightly beaten
grated parmesan cheese, about 1 handful

Mix all together in a mixer or food processor, I use a food
processor and toss in a few small chunks of parmesan cheese first to grate those, then add the rest all at once and pulse until thoroughly mixed, takes maybe 3 minutes start to finish.

grease a 9x9 pan (I use spray canola oil), bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes

Texture is sort of fudge/putty-like .Keep them in freezer as they freeze very well. They can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 days. I cut them into very small squares. I toss them into a freezer bag and leave in freezer until needed. Only take out the amount required.

CAUTION: do not refreeze any leftovers, just make the pups do some extra tricks at home to get the goodies.

These liver treats are great to.

LIVER TREATS
1 lb liver ( any type)
2 cups Brown Rice Flour
1 T. garlic powder (the recipe I have says to taste )

Mix in food processor, add a little water if necessary. Mixture should have the consistency of cement. Spread into jelly roll pan, 10 x 13" pan with sides (I line with parchment paper). Bake at 300 degrees F. 30 min.for soft treats. Cut into tiny squares. For hard treats bake for another 30 minutes. Important: Cut into squares after the first 30 minutes otherwise you will have one big square that is impossible to cut.
Keep in the freezer

I do sometimes make my own treats as well, but I just figured flour wasn't the greatest for them. I've never thought of using gluten free flour though--that's a great idea. Freeze dried liver or homemade jerky is also great! And the tuna fudge definitely sounds like something my two would be into.......but as far as treats you can buy, it seems to be slim-pickins'. And it's true, at least if you make them yourself, you know exactly what's in them.
