We have gone through several different types of food with Samus and Max. We are on Innova now and I like it so far but I keep hearing about all these supplements you can add to their food. What supplements do you use and why? Is there any type of book or website that lists them all and their uses? Also with Innova, I have noticed that they seem very hungry, more so than with the other foods we have fed them. Has anyone else ran into this or know the cause?

Okay... I know some of you have opinions on this...I wanna hear them! to clarify what I mean by supplements– stuff like Apple Cider Vinegar, yogurt, turkey meat, garlic, etc...

I feed raw, not kibble, but here is a list of some of the supplements I use. Most of the info is from the BARFWorld website or my personal notes from research:

COD LIVER OIL
-excellent source of ACTIVATED omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, Vitamins A and D.
-improves the health of the skin and the body's ability to deal with inflammation.
-aids the liver, strengthens bones, and the nervous system
-calcium is better assimilated in the presence of Vitamin D.

DOSE - feed 3-4 days per week
10 lb - 1/4tsp
25 lb - 1/2tsp
50 lb - 1 tsp
75 lb - 1 1/2 tsp
100 lb - 2 tsp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WILD ATLANTIC SALMON OIL
-ACTIVATED source of omega-3 essential fatty acids.
-important for the regulation of blood pressure, reproductive health, muscle contractions, blood clotting, inflammation.
DOSE - 1/2 tsp per every 20 lb per day.
OR
GROUND ORGANIC FLAX SEED
-INACTIVATED source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, but much cheaper than salmon oil.
DOSE - 2-3 TBSP per day.
Omega-3 EFAs are commonly lacking in commercially prepared pet foods.
Activated EFA's are much easier for the dog's body to use immediately because they do not require conversion by enzymes, like the inactivated EFA's do, to be used by the dog's body.
**Omega-6 EFAs can be supplemented by Evening Primrose Oil (activated) or vegetable oils (inactivated). Omega-6 EFAs are found in sufficient amounts in raw meat and eggs and therefore do not need to be added to a balanced diet. Excess of omega-6 EFAs can cause health problems. When excess omega-6 is paired with a lack of omega-3 skin, reproductive and growth problems can occur.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
-source of 19 of the 22 essential minerals
-fights body toxins
-aids in digestion of bones (I've read this but don't know if it's an old wives tale or not).
DOSE - 1/2 tsp per day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VITAMIN E CAPSULES

DOSE - every day
10 lb - 50 IU
25 lb - 100 IU
50 lb - 200 IU
75 lb - 400 IU
100 lb - 600 IU

BARFPLUS SUPPLEMENT (or 1/2 kelp + 1/2 alfalfa)
(product info straight from BARFWorld)

This supplement can be added to kibble as well.

These vibrant green plants contain natural enzymes, high in antioxidants and a mixture of broad-spectrum nutrients and phytochemicals.
-VEGETABLE CONCENTRATES

For more info check out http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet.shtml and look at the supplements link.

With a well balanced diet involving lots of variety supplements are not required. My guys are young and still growing and developing so I choose to supplement (it gives me peace of mind!)

Hope this helps!

I too feed raw like Tam and also use those supplements she has listed. But if I am correct, you shouldn't give some of these supplements to dogs being fed on kibbles. Which ones? I don't know. The reason might be because kibbles attempt to provide a complete and balanced meal in every serving, some of these nutrients are already in it and adding extra might cause problems for your dog. Especially Innova, which is a premium kibble. Before I fed raw, we also used to feed Innova. Sometimes, we would mix yogurt, chicken broth, a little ground meat, or eggs to make their food a little more interesting.

I feed my puppy Solid Gold puppy food, and I supplement with Solid Gold's "Seameal" powder. If you go to www.solidgoldhealth.com and click on "supplements", you can read the details of this product. Basically it is finely-ground seaweed that you mix in with the kibble (it kind of stinks, but my pup doesn't seem to mind !) It is supposed to replace the nutrients that are cooked out of the kibble during the manufacturing process, and it increases the digestibility percentage of the kibble as well (from 73% to 92%). I buy the 16 oz. jar and it lasts forever because you don't really use that much on a daily basis, I use about 1/4 tsp a day right now spread over her 3 daily feedings. I have used Solid Gold's products right from the start (that's what our breeder feeds their dogs), so I can't really compare other foods, but I'm pleased at the way Molly is coming along.

Thruman..

...we are right with ya on Solid Gold and the Seamal supplements! We had Dasia and Bianca on Innova, great food however Dasia had a hard time with it :( so we switched her over to Solid Gold. THEY LOVE IT! We also gave some to our neighbors who have a fawn femal named Nya, she was on Nature's Recipe. She pushes out her old food and eats only the Solid Gold kibble! They also said that she has tons more energy and she know longer has runny stool!

Gonna have to agree with ya on the stinky' ness of the Seamel. yuck. hehe but they dont' mind it as well and is good for them!
