I just came home with a dental Kong. It has grooves and a hole in the center. I just pushed a few pieces of kibble into the grooves and gave it to Rock. He's still chewing on it even though the kibble is gone. I can't wait to get more creative with it. I can see that it is going to be a favorite!

I really hate to ask this as it might be a silly question to you but you state a raw bone from a butcher or supermarket. Here is the question...What about any risk of Salmonella or such from the uncooked meat/bone from the butcher.

I might be missing something here.

Hi Carol -

It's not a stupid question at all! Rather logical, actually. But canine systems were designed specifically for the consumption of raw meat. Their digestive system processes raw meat so quickly that (unlike humans) salmonella and raw food-borne illnesses aren't an issue for them. The digestive system for humans, on the other hand, moves much slower and allows time for bacteria to develop in the gut.

Keep in mind that dogs have been eating raw for thousands of years, what we know as "kibble" has only been in existence for maybe 100 years, not nearly enough time for some sort of evolutionary process to take place.

Hope that helps :)
