Rocky went to the vet for a check yesterday and she recommends losing some weight. He eats Innova Dog, 1 1/4 cups dry plus 1/3 of a can, twice daily..he does get a Greenie and a peanut butter bone each evening (which he loves). We also mix cottage cheese, plain yogurt, or maybe egg with his food.

That sounds like a lot, just writing it here! He eats every lick, though. We plan to cut out the pnut butter maybe subbing a knuckle bone instead. Any other low fat suggestions there?

Also, the vet suggested that we switch to the senior version of the Innova...less cals. Does anyone know of any problem with doing that?

What other suggestions does anyone have?
Rocky is 2 years old and gets about 1 1/2 hours of exercise (running on the beach, playing with other dogs, walks) every day. He is 80 lbs ....

Thanks!

I had to put my two on diets about a year ago. Samson has lost 20 lbs. and Delilah has lost about 14lbs. I bought Blackwood low fat and Royal Canin Natural Blend for Seniors. I mixed up the two. I carefully measured it. It took them about a year to lose the weight, but the doctor was really pleased that I had taken the extra weight off of them. I put a dab of fat free yogurt on top of their food, and I add some water to the kibble. I feed them 2 times a day. While they were loosing the weight, Samson got one and a half cups at each feeding. Delilah got one and a forth cup at each feeding. I stopped giving them the large Old Mother Hubbard treat bones. I gave them the smaller treat bones instead. Only one or two a day. The vet told me that each of the large treat bones was like us eating a candy bar. You do not want to take the weight off too rapidly. It is better to do it slowly so their bodies can adjust easier. I hope that this has helped.

Try only giving a bone one time a week, we do usually friday nites. Give low fat treats like Wellness- they make good wholesome treats. I would stop adding so much to his food, or stop giving the canned food totally. You might want to try a higher fiber content in the dog food- those are usually low calorie.
Hope this helps- Rachel
