Rescue places will do it as early as 16 weeks to ensure that the puppies on their hands leave them neutered...

But for your own puppy, I would do it at 5-6 months also. I agree with my vet's idea that puppies need to finish all their shots before sending them back for a possible stressfull surgery. Of course it's just temporary stress on their bodies and not mentally or emotionally.

Daisy is exactly 5.5 months and had it done this morning (I cried like a baby - she was happy as a clam and beaned the vet tech). Her vet does it after 5 months.

I waited until Evie was about 9 months to spay her. She had not had her first heat yet, and I wanted to get it done before her 1st heat anyways. I know they can spay/neuter when the dog is older too, but they risk more complications with age. My 1st boxer I had spayed when she was 4 months. Good Luck!

Don't know how true it is but I was told for male dogs you should wait til they are a year old if you want them to grow to their full potential - the testosterone helps their bones and things like that. Everyone seems to have a different opinion about it, but this was the advice I was given by my vet and the breeder - and he was actually fixed a few weeks ago (at 11 months he was already 77-79 lbs, so I figured it was time. And to all those well meaning people who made it sound like if I got the dog fixed earlier he would be calmer (knock the wind out of his sails so to say) may I just say in my case they were wrong - No one here said that just well meaning friends and neighbors who offered me their advice and made nuetering sound like a training tool!!!

Anyway good luck with the surgery and he will be back to normal in no time (like 4 hours after I picked mine up from the vet he was totally normal!)
