Hello, being English and new in the forum id like to know what a crate is.Although i think ive got a good idea, and am not amused at the thought.

It can come in different sizes. Some are tent-like and canvas, others are plastic with breathing holes, etc., and others are wired all around.

Dogs are denning animals and as much as they might fight the crate at first, it's the best thing for working parents to keep their 'babies' safe from harmful things they might find while loose in the house.

Mandi is correct, I decided I really didn't like the crate idea and mine have never been crated..however a lot of members do crate train with great success...I just never cared for it!

LOL. We don't really care for it much either. . .but it's safe for him in those few hours between when I go to work, come home for lunch, and then come home again at the end of the work day. I'm hoping eventually to be a stay at home mom and then Sam can roam free when I'm home. :) And if that doesn't happen (stupid monetary concerns) then I'm hoping in a year or so we'll be able to trust Sam enough to leave him outside of the crate by himself during the day and at night. It's entirely too hot for him to be outside so crating is the only option for his safety.

Yes. Most people try to make the time as little as possible. For us, Sam is crated four hours max at a time, and never when we are home.

Despite the way it sounds, it is not cruel. Since they are denning animals, the crate acts as their den. It's a safe place for them to be, instead of roaming the house alone where they can eat things they shouldn't, or outside where they can overheat or be stolen. If you don't believe me, you can research crating yourself. Most (9/10) of experts will fully back crating an animal for their own safety.

I dont know, you see ,both myself and my wife work. When we decided to get Lennox .We more or less knew what we were letting ourselves in for.I took the first two weeks off work,to get him clean. My wife took two weeks later. We also took him to training. Now having a puppy come into your house is like having a two year old child. You make the house child safe(dog safe). After a few hard months taking the good with the bad,Your dog will have gotten use to being alone for 4 hrs.A bitr of time and patience works wonders.

I think you happen to have an exceptional puppy then! (congrats on that) Mine would tear the house apart chasing the cats around while we are gone. We do make every effort to make sure he's never in there for very long. And we did the research on the whole denning thing before-hand to make ourselves more comfortable with it. It really depends on the dog. Some dogs can never be trusted loose and alone in the house - they look for trouble.

I completely agree with every thing Mandi is saying. It is in their best interest and keeps them from getting into things they shouldn't...I stay home all the time and by now mine know what they can and can't do so if I leave it is ok...

I do feel bad for having Mya in her crate while we are working (about 9 hours max) but I know that she is safe in there. She has a blanket and most of her strong toys (don't need her destroying and eating a toy!) She goes right in there by herself in the mornings when she sees us getting ready. We don't go anywhere after work so that she is free to run around and play all night and now she sleeps in our room so she isn't in there all the time anymore.
