my 12 week old boxer bentley is so fun and playful
im curious to know why he shakes his butt in my aunts dogs face when they are playing
sometimes he does it after she barks at him and he has done it to other dogs to but not to all usually just the ones he is playing with what is the meaning of this shaking of his booty

Dogs do this as a "fear-me-not" gesture. It is to give the other dog complete access to the dog's vulnerable area-the rear! It is another enticing play move......gotta love those boxer butts!

In the wild, wolves will incapacitate and kill their prey by first: ripping out their throats, second, ripping out their bowels and then third, dive into the gut area. These are the three most vulnerable areas to an animal. Any one of them are surely gonna cause death. So when a dog exposes these areas, it is to show the other dog they mean no harm. Ex. a dog who lifts and turns his head away from another dog - or the typical submission on the back with belly exposed - or in this case, giving them the butt! Of course I call it "Doing the butt". LOL

My Smiley, he will do all three when he meets up with a new dog. But that is only after he does the "Freeze".......which to some dogs is a threat or warning of attack. He of course does this manuever as a preparation of the OTHER DOG attacking him. He was used as a bait dog, so he will always assume every dog wants to kill him, but he was a bait dog cause he has no "game" in him. He will never fight, always lose because he just doesn't have it in him. He was briefly attacked a few weeks ago even after he displayed all three of the above. It was a shihtzu that snapped at his neck - and this was when Smiley exposed it. Nasty little puttin' pups! Of course, I have to always step in to protect my pibble.......so funny that people fear him when he's walking down the street. It no longer makes me mad, just makes me laugh. Poor Smiley, even afraid of the friendliest cats!
