What do you do to help with the heat?

We love the kiddie pool at our house!!! On someones suggestion here on BW I bought mason some diving rings and "pool" stuff. He loves splashing aroung and dunking his head to get to the stuff at the bottom. The only problem is that these things are made for kids not dogs with strong jaws, so as soon as I see him chewing and destroying I throw them out. Fortunately, we have a Big Lots, I can buy packages of 6 for 2.99, so considering how much good dogtoys cost these days, even though I bought 7 or 8 packages I probably still saved $$$$, plus Mason loves them. Aspen isn't so sure yet about the pool, she prefers to dig holes and eat poop ( yuck) Hopefully she'll grow out of that and join her big brother!

Hot Days

We get some really hot ones out here in Los Angeles, so we always have the hose set up in the back-yard and we water Mush down around 3pmish each day. During the heat of the day, she's usually sleeping on the cold marble floor. BUT, sometimes, when we take her for a walk, she get's hotsy-totsy feet, so we make sure to avoid paved roads and bring ice water to pour on her little feets....

We live in SoCal and it gets pretty hot. We don't leave them outside at all (Skye the puppy is crated & Boo is bombproof). They also have a cool mat on tile in case they get hot. We walk them late in the evening.

If I go to horseshows, they have a playpen with the cool mat and a fan--they stay pretty comfortable.

Hey there. I live in Fort Myers, FL, about 150 miles south of Tampa. It is really hot here, and Boxers don't really tolerate the heat too well. I would never leave mine out in the heat all day, shade trees or not. Mine pretty much stays in all day in the A/C, except for the occasional bath outside or when we play out by the pool. Walks are done in the morning or evening when it's not quite as hot, and the roads cool down enough to walk on. It's really just unbearable May through September, than it cools down enough for the dogs to hang outside and play a little longer. It is a great place to live, it's my idea of paradise anyway. I wouldn't trade it for snow any day. Good luck with your decision!

I'd like to clarify that Victoria is an inside dog and I have no intention of leaving her outside for long periods of time but she does like to be where the skinkids are, therefore we want a house with shade trees.

I will look into the cooling mat, I think that would be a great idea, even here where it's currently 80+ and sticky humid... even though we have A/C I bet she'll LOVE that!!

I am hoping that if we do decide to move, she will adapt and just learn that she really does not always want to be outside with the kids. LOL!!
